Cool some advice

Let's say I was interested in an early 928 ( say 83 to 86 ).....which of course I am not ( in case the wife reads this! )....but if I was....what are some things I should look out for, what is high mileage for these cars and how upset would I be with an automatic ( if I could not find the right manual in the right shape and price ).....????

Also....what's the real story with cost to maintain? Is it that much greater than other P-cars?

TIA

Joe

Pretty much the same things as with a 944..

Do a search and then read the newbie thread that is a sticky. Also do a search for the reviews of e-bay cars and you'll pick up a lot from the keen eyes here...

i would say that over 200k miles is high... but before it goes this far you will probably have to replace the shocks and steering rack! hard to say if youd greatly miss the manual shift, ive got one of each and i like them both.

Well if you were REALLY interested in a 928 of any year you would want to get one with a recent timing belt and water pump already done and PROVEN as this is pretty much the most expensive part but you should already know that with the 944.

An '86 with a vin # ending higher than 1000='86.5. Would give you the S4 suspension and brakes with ABS standard. 32v engine rated at 288hp. Lots of FuN!!

The most expensive part: how about $85 for the p/s return hose? Or the Idle control valve, $225 or the wire, $265. Oh, you meant "part" as in part of the whole process not as in piece of equipment. I see.

Everything mentioned above is about right. I have an auto, '82, with 178K miles on it. I drive it everyday in spring/summer/fall and love it. The only thing I'd add is that on cars this old, the rubber and plastic parts get brittle and crack.

Everything from the plug wires to the wiring harness plugs to the windshield washer hose get brittle and crack/break/snap etc. I've replaced:
coolant res. , plug wires, "green-wire" connectors, ww hoses, intake tubes, many interior *****, sliders, all belts (and they like to go in sequence, so if you change one, do them all!)

But, once done, it has been the best car I've had. (for 3 yrs so far) - Ruf
