Default EASY Auto Trans question....

OK...I keep trying to think this one thru - but can come up with legitimate reason for BOTH possible answers.

My tranny is shifting a little harsh, and I want to adjust the modulator. Looked thru the repair manuals, and it just says to "Adjust accordingly".

To soften my shifts - do I turn the modulator pressure adjustment CLOCKWISE or COUNTERCLOCKWISE??

Hi Mark. Counterclockwise. Try half turn at a time. Happy turning. Mike.

It's in the WSM in chapter 38 (page varies depending on model year)

It is under a small rubber cap.

Mark,
You probably checked already, but just in case...
1. A lot of folks seem to like that standard feel when shifting the auto's manually, or at kick-down so you might be on the right track in your effort to adjust feed/operating pressure.
2. Those same folks adjust the throttle, kickdown cables a bit to tight and raise the idle, then advance the timing - distributor - at the same time.
3. It also goes without saying that shifter cable gets snugged-up a bit at the same time by the same folks.
4. Take your sHARk out for a swim to warm up the tranny and do a 'flat-spot' fluid level check.
We can get away with a 1/2 quart or so extra in the engine but don't chance being over by much when dealing with the transmission.
Save the seals!
We all get a wild hair every now and again but when someone makes a whole bunch of adjustments at once like those above instead of incrementally things start happening...

The most likely cause of you hard shifts is low or no vacuum to the modulator. There should be 15 to 20 inches of manifold vacuum at the modulator, check it at the modulator line by the transmission. Another cause of hard shifts is the rubber cap that’s on the modulator check it for cracks. Modulators just don’t lose there adjustment.
