Lizard,
I'll be surprised if the insurance company doesn't mess you over yet. They have a battery of lawyers whose job is to deal with issues in ways you haven't thought of yet. I'm not a lawyer but I hit a brick wall with an Insurance company out of Spokane, WA and I gave up and retained a lawyer. Hated to do it, but they know the Ins. companies' tricks and (HOPEFULLY) I will prevail. My case is a little different. A guy ran a red light and I hit him with my classic Chevy '78 4WD pickup that I'm restoring. I have $11,000 in recent restoration receipts on it and they only are offering me less than $1800 in compensation, comparing my vehicle with a rustbucket with 130K miles on it (I have a new factory V8 with 13K miles, totally restored undercarriage, new tires, new paint, etc, etc.). The insurance company is steadfast in their offer and I feel that since their client broke the law...and broke my truck, they should fix it. They're forcing me to sue them. They say it's totaled but all it needs is two fenders, an inner fender, headlight and hood. I'll probably spend some thousands more attempting to get justice but it's the principle more than the money. I just want my rig back on the road.
I sympathize with you. But as they say in Spanish, "ojo" (what out!). When it comes to insurance companies and fair dealings, I'm a pessimist. My point is....can you afford to NOT get legal advice? But, at the same time, getting an honest lawyer is essential....and it probably won't be quick unless you really have caught them in a serious infraction.

Ah, Canada. I missed that. So, you can sell a car in Canada with no title or registration. The insurance company did, according to this. Very strange way to operate.

Do I understand correctly that the ICBC is a government-run insurance company? In that case, I would expect it would be right on par with the government-run health care system.

I have no influence over the current administration's predilection for War, but if given another term, I'm sure they will get around to attacking Canada soon enough.

ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia) is the Govt agency that issues the title as well as insure your car (at least the basic coverage of liability) exclusively. Its compulsory if you want to license your car here. The additional coverage such as collision damage or extra liability amount (over the $250,000 minimum) can be purchased from other commercial insurance companies.
