I got a PM via RL offering to put me in touch with somebody looking to sell me a set of Cup 1 wheels.

The RL email looked correct. The odd thing was there was no PM I could find.

Second clue was the misspelled businessman.

During the course of a couple of days the price changed from $2600 to $3200 with shipping. I offered to send shipping labels, but needed more information.

No more information was forthcoming and he said he'd get that to me after I sent the funds. Ok that sealed the deal. There was no way I was going to pay.

I googled the email address and it turns out the email IP is in Nigeria.

I **** you not.

So, if you get an PM make sure there's a PM you can find.

I hope this prevents this from happening to you.

Yep. Had the pictures to back up the sale. Made a decent effort. I'll give him that.

Good catch and some nice social engineering effort on their part.

Any message that starts with "Hello buddy" ought to automatically end up in the trash...

What follows is true story.

Back in the late 90's my future boss got one of those Nigerian prince letters offer a percentage of the funds if he would help them get the funds released.

After a lot of back and forth he agrees and books a flight to Nigeria.

While he is sitting on the tarmac at the airport in Nigeria he reads an article in the WSJ about Nigerian prince scams where they kidnap you and hold you for ransom.

He about ****. He knows they are waiting to meet him. He tries to hide in the plane. When he disembarks he makes a beeline for the bathroom and hides in there for hours.

Finally, he books another flight back to Atlanta.

He lived to tell the story - not sure I would ever admit I was that easy a mark.
