Yes, do as much of HWY 1 as you can but know that it's closed due to landslide.

.............................................. They keep their eye out for the unusual. ....................... keep your hands on the steering wheel until the officer arrives at the window, be nice and do everything very slowly, even announcing what you intend to do ("I'm going to get the papers out of the glove box", etc). They're just as nervous as you are with all the monkey business that has occurred lately.................

Bugger ... just spotted that last night
Here's a preview of Little Tujunga, run in the opposite direction that you'd be going. It is epic, 229 is epic, 33 is epic.
Ignore the camera rattling against the glass, sorry for the noise.

I can't help on the border issues but...
I just bought my car in Winnipeg and drove it home to Vancouver Island. Manitoba has a Canada wide transport temp license so I bought that for the drive, 45.00 CDN, worth it.
I also had the PO put new tires on the car. I had a PPI done at Porsche Winnipeg and the tires 14 years old.
Luckily I was driving in Aug but snow will certainly find you.

Welcome!
I had an epiphany in 2013: every guy needs to own a Porsche at least once. A month later, I drove a Cayman home from California. But I took a southerly route, it was September, and the car was only four years old.
As someone mentioned above, plates go with the car in California, unless they are vanity plates. You then have a generous time to register in your own name (7 days?). That's a rule that may only apply to cars remaining in California, and/or only to California residents. I had to send in a form releasing the PO from liability, but I don't recall any demand, or even opportunity, to pay CA sales tax. All of this is handled differently in different states, so it was unlikely a Trooper would know what to do. I felt pretty safe. I managed not to get stopped, so I don't know.
Having the wrong plates on a car is not complicated to a Trooper. I wouldn't do that.
Your first opportunity to join the gang in person may be Camp 928 next June (info in my signature).

I could do that, but only in the late morning, this Friday and I think I can talk Anissa into it...we have to be at Thunderhill by about 3pm for a 25hr endurance race. Qualifying is 5pm Friday. Race 11a Saturday to Noon Sunday.
No pansy stopping for the night.

So I collected my new ride in Tiburon late yesterday afternoon. There was a bit of drama due to the fact that the driver's seat couldn't be adjusted fore or aft -- after a couple of hours of trouble shooting testing switches for power etc. etc. all that was required was a gentle tap on the motor with the end of a hefty flashlight and boom, we were off to the races. My buddy and I then had a nice 50 mile drive to Santa Rosa and were able to make some first impression observations:
1. She's not a fast car, but she's a very adept and long legged GT cruiser.
2. She lollops along at 80mph at just over 2000rpm.
3. There's no shimmy or vibration at the wheel, she runs and stops nice and straight.
4. Thanks to the seller for a very honest presentation of his car and for a seamless transaction.
5. I'll post more observations as the days pass between now and arrival at Greg's shop in LA.

As the “buddy” in this road trip, I can confirm Spit’s assessment of his new toy. I’m quite envious of how nice and original this car is, and how tight it feels. Looking forward to the drive ahead!
