Default 1st ever 928 event in Finland

We have discussed for long time with few local 928 owners of having 928 event in Finland. Now it's finally going to happen on saturday 12th of June. It will be held on farm courtyard in Lempäälä, 160 km's north of Helsinki, 20 km's south of Tampere. Event starts at noon and ends when people get fed up and go home. Plan is to get all interested together for checking each others cars, talking trash and some barbecue. Hopefully weather is good and turnout as large as possible in a country where there are only about 70 928's in registration. Of course this is by no means limited to locals, everyone who wants to attend is welcome. For detailed instructions how to get there, send PM or email to erkka.vilhunen@iki.fi

Regards,

Erkka

Despite really bad weather, event was unbelievable success. 24 928's, two 911's and 944 present and some 40-50 people. Was expecting half, two thirds at most even on sunny day. Here's some pictures. Two or three late arrivals are missing, including amethyst metallic no sunroof '92 GTS 5sp.

Very nice!

Do most of those hiibernate half of the year or more?

What happens in Finland, if you drive a 928 as it is meant to be driven? Do you guys have cops hiding with radar guns, photo radars, and all that other fun stuff?

Very well done! I admire the country setting - more fitting than a supermarket parking lot.
It seems that only the photographer was brave enough to take the rain - or was there free beer inside the big barn?

Thanks Nicole & Garth S

Most 928's stay inside 4-5 months during winter. White and bright red S are used all year round. They even have engine heaters installed to warm it up before startup as they're kept outside.

Later on there was free beer and sausages on hand but reason why everyone else stayed inside during picture taking was that they were on house tour. I used that time differently.

Here's the GTS:

Don't get me started on traffic fines. Quess you already did. We do have cops in bushes with laser radar and ptoto radars on some country roads in middle of nowhere (but not in traffic lights). How stupid can you get?

We also have unique system (so called dayfines) where persons income affects how much one has to pay for certain offence. Idea behind it is that $100 fine feels different to poor and rich person. To make penalty equally painful to both fine isn't some fixed sum. It's certain percentage of ones income and value of property. There is set number of dayfines defined for each offence and $ figure is counted based on that. Simply put, when poor gets $100 ticket really rich might get up to $100000 or more for same simple offence. This is no joke. Here's link to police website where it's possible to calculate how much one has to pay for certain deeds.

http://www.poliisi.fi/poliisi/lp/hom...256BB5003FD54C

Probably link will not work for long as I couldn't find permanent address for the page but while it does just fill in these:

Teko = deed
for example:
Ylinopeus 25 km/h, rajoitus yli 60 km/h = Speeding 25 km/h above limit at 60 km/h or above zone

Nettotulo € / kk = Net income in euros in one month

Huollettavia = Number of children

Verotettava omaisuus = Taxable property
alle 85 000 € = under 85 000 €
yli 85 000 € = above 85 000 €
yli 170 000 € = above 170 000 €

By filling in those, site calculates number of dayfines (päiväsakko) and fine (sakko) in euros. So monthly income (average from past 6 months), number of children and amount of property all affect how much one has to pay for certain offence. This doesn't apply to really small exceeding of limit though. There's smaller fixed fines for them.

System was originally developed on time when almost no-one had seriously large income. Those who owned large number of stocks or other valuables rarely got large fine as counting formula is mostly based on monthly income and not on taxable property. Rich could make sure their paycheck showed small numbers. Over past two decades technology boom and Nokia in particular has greated many new millionaires who have gotten really ridiculous fines because they have sold some stocks under six months prior to being caught speeding. So just for 25 km/h over the limit, nothing else wrong, one can get fines between 115 € and several 100000 €. And cops can check ones income from tax authorities on the spot thanks to modern mobile technology. Luckily fines are payed later on to bank account and not on the spot.

Small advice to all foreigners. If you're siting at back seat of Finnish police car and cops ask how much you have earned in past six months. What ever you do, do not give out the information or they will use it to count your fine. If you don't spill it out, all they can do is count with smallest possible value which is 6 € times amount of dayfines or 115 €, whichever is larger.

Regards,

Erkka

Oh that's cool! I used to fly into Tampere all the time. We stayed at a hotel built into the mall downtown- Sokos I think.

The neat thing about that part of Finland in June: It only gets dark at 2 AM. Then the sun comes up at 4 AM!

-Someone who lives near there owns a Mig 25 fighter jet- we walked over and looked at it one day. It leaks all over the place, but appears airworthy. This person has a need for speed- makes me think that he/she probably has a 928 as well....

Best rally drivers in the world come from Finland!

There's several different types of heaters.

Electric resistors that are installed into engine block or cylinder head. Block is more favorable position. On many blocks there are plugs to water area that are there for manufacturing reasons or whatever and they're easiest and best place for installation. In 928's case there's no such thing so rear of passanger side (LHD) head is best option.

Other type is electric heater for example into water line between cars engine and heater core. These aren't as effective as in block heaters. Third one is newer innnovation, radiating heater bolted or glued to the side of block. Also not as effective as block heaters.

For all of the above there's option of adding interior heater also. These are boxes usually placed at front passanger footwell that contains resistor and small but effective fan which recirculates air inside cabin. It's like having heat gun plasting inside for hour or two each morning. This makes large difference in really cold days. Also keeps windows dryer when shoes bring snow in by removing humidity.

Swedish company Defa is large maker of the stuff. http://www.defa.com

On appartment complexes electric ones are connected to mains through poles in parking lot. Many times they contain clock that can be set to turn heating on and off at certain time of day. It's not healthy for coolant or heater to keep heat on constantly and it's very convenient to be able to set time on previous day. Usually there's plug installed at front of car so all that's needed is plug in cord between pole and car. Car is nicely worm in the morning after one or two hours heating. It also saves engine. Studies show cold starts are real killer. One start from -10 celcius temperature is same as driving over 1000 km's. It's advisable to use heater below +4 celcius.

In case electricity isn't available, there's much more expensive option of fuel heaters. They heat coolant by having small flame in chamber. Fuel is taken from cars own fuel tank and exhaust is vented to air. These are like having cigarette lighter on under engines water line. There's versions for both gasoline and diesel. Usually clock inside car that controls it. So basically one set up time when ones car sets itself on fire. Webasto http://www.webasto.de is one company who does these. Same firm that did 928's sunroof components I believe.

Best systems also use cars own interior heater motor to circulate some heat inside. They run it at slow speed while heating water. It's important to leave heater adjusted to full warm setting. Then water valve is open and water inside heater core gets warm also. This applies to electric systems also. Of course running blower drains battery so these systems monitor battery voltage and turn of blower when voltage drops under predetermined value.

Latest innovation is adding mobile phone to these systems. Basically one calls to heater and tells it to start or stop. Very practical to have when your schedule changes. Don't have to go outside to change clocks timing. Just dial heater and turn it on.

Erkka

Engine heaters are very common in Sweden as well, more the further north in the country.

If you consider that the optimal running temperature of an engine is 85-90 Celsius it takes a lot of beating already at around 10 degrees when warming up. There are big environmental and fuel savings when using it properly. Another thing that is good about living where it's cold is that during winter hardly any salt is used since it's to cold for it to help melting the snow anyway..

Nice pics Vilhuer - maybe I can join you next year..

Very interesting, Vilhuer! I will never sped in Finland. Well, who knows, if I'll ever make it there for a visit. I missed the time when my cousein was working there at the German Embassy...

Sweanders: If they DO use sale in Malmö, you need to keep an eye on some non-galvanized parts on your car. I recently replaced the door seals and was shocked to find the little scres that holds the side molding to be totally rustyl It would have never occurred to me that this couldhappen in California, behind a rubber seal...
