No, I didn't try to lift the body on the wires. 928 Specialists warned me about that. I tried to lift the body on the on the throttle cable assembly which I forgot to "Lay over Fender". Whatever that blue capped tube is that runs to the exaust manifold was caught on the throttle cable assembly and is now half the original hight. I also missed the hose between the power steering pump and the reservoir. When I noticed that one and loosened the clamp, it was stuck tight. "Snip!" Problem Solved. It needed replacing anyway.

I vote for Head gasket and all other gaskets, vaccum lines and seals you can get to. Don't forget the belt and waterpump and tensioner. Most of these require more time and patience then advanced skill and money. Pull the cam covers off and paint (or powder coat) them along with the intake prior to reinstallation. (Cosmetics)
Then get the thing running. Solve problems you know you have first, then attack mods and upgrades later.

A 32 valve motor is not an easy "first rebuild" candidate. You might be better off buying a used motor that is known to be in good shape. Mistakes can be more expensive then if you paid someone who knows what they're doing.
At 130k miles, it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the rod bearings and cam chains. Beyond what others have said, it is between you and your bank account. Once the engine is back in it is much more difficult to do any major task.

yep, what they said and don't forget to go through the radiator/cooling system, every piece of rubber and gasket you see...caps, rotors, maybe plug wires too...pulling motor will really help - good move!
slippery slope? more like an avalanche, but you can use your rennlist card as a rescue device...get friendly w/the big 3....

I suggest you take the transmission out as well. Fix the TT, and rebuild the trans. Also, wYAIT, you can remove the suspension, and replace all that rubber around that.
Maybe rip out the interior?

get a parts washer - like a bad date, the less you have to spend to clean up the mess, the better off you'll be... shops quote 40hrs just to reassemble one of these motors- at rates up to $100/hr... you don't want them wasting time disassembling, cleaning, inspecting, prepping for re-installation...just be sure not to lose any pieces to the puzzle you bring them, like I did...
then w/the $$ you "save" - may as well add new springs, poly bushings, shocks, ball joints, pistons (lots of opinons and options here) and while the interior is out as BC mentioned, you can add an entertainment system and lament over the NOS/stroker/blower/block options... budget?... funny guy!! that's just what we tell our wives along w/ "it's less $$ than OEM, but better - so it just makes sense"...your secret is safe here, but your wallet is history....

I would save on the total rebuild of the engine and make sure you get the tranny up to snuff. You will absolutely hate it otherwise. I think we all have the nagging smaller problems that we can tackle but if the thing isnt performing the way it should and you cant enjoy driving.....it will drive you nuts.
