" I'd much rather replace wimpy rods and/or crankshaft"

I beg to differ. I think the factory rods (1978-1988) and crank are very strong. I think at one point Tim Murphy was going to get someone to do a destructive test on the factory rod and compare that to a Carillo. It would be interesting.

It has been done a couple of times. The factory rod is about 25% weaker than the billet rods available from many high end sellers, but their weight is significantly higher as well. Our rods come in at about 600 grams, the factory 951 rods around 850 grams.

Those are the rough numbers.

Hi Mark...

I agree with you 100%! I did not mean to imply that the 928 rods and crank are wimpy; as a matter of fact, I've always been a strong proponent of them. I apologize for not being clearer.

What I meant to say was, if I had a choice for a given engine, I would hope that the block did not need to be fixed/repaired for high horsepower, and I would gladly replace the rods/crank within that block IF they were suspect.

Unfortunately though in the case of the 928, it's the other way around. The rods and crank are stellar, but the stock block is suspect for high horsepower usage.
