Clicking Noise in Rear Wheel

Clicking Noise in Rear Wheel
Dear Felow Shark drivers,
I am back on this site after many years. I recently upgraded my '83 S for a '91 S4. Love the car.
Lately I have been getting a clicking sound out of the driver's side rear wheel. It sounds like there's a rock stuck in the tire (I checked), or like a wheel with loose lugs (checked those too). It comes and goes and can get loud and very mechincal sounding. Then it'll disappear for a week or two, but it ocmes back.
The bearing feels tight when you pull on the wheel. Any thoughts as to the problem child here would be greatly appreciated. Could it by the drive shaft?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Chris

Chris, chock the wheels firmly, set the brake, and put the trans in neutral. Reach up under there and grab the halfshaft and wiggle it. If it makes noise the grease has probably dried out. I have a writeup on my site that details rebuilding the halfshafts, but if you have a later car the outer joint may be welded rather than bolted in, and you will not be able to do the job without removing the wheel and the infamous "332 ft/lb" nut that holds the splined shaft to the hub.
You might want to put some info about your car in your sig, so that when you ask for help people don't have to wonder what year your car is.

When you hear the clicking noise again, pull gently up on the parking brake handle and see if that changes anything. Many people forget that there is a set of parking brake pads under the rear disc brake hats and a noise back there could be caused by the parking brake system.
