Default R-R the Thermostat Housing Leak

I've seen so many 928's leak on the thermostat housing right up front, and now I know why. Yesterday I pulled my '85's t-bone and found the rubber had deteriorated exactly like toilet seal rubber ... you know how the moment you touch it, it pastes your fingers with black icky perished rubber paste? .... Same. No wonder those seals leak on so many cars, they are not what I would call high quality. I have the seals to replace, but will be sure to paste some nice American standard Loctite Orange in there. Btw to get that sucker off on the '85 was trippy, where I was completely unable to do it on an S4 with the intake in-place.

pps: WHat the heck is that test port up front used for? Man, what a setup!!

O-ring seals require no sealant. Simply install them with silicone grease.

With the intake removed it is much easier to get a wrench in there.

I recall being able to replace mine by loosening the portion of the intake closest to the thermostat housing enough to get the housing off. One of the advantages of the massive 85-86 intake manifold I guess....separate sections!

You can in fact remove it on an S4 without removing or loosening the intake. I have done it quite a few times. Won a bet once, lunch for a week.
