I always thought the C4 Corvette was Chevy's attempt to mimic the 928....too many similarities to think otherwise. 
Look at the overall side profile, hood shape, side pillar, rear glass, front light placement, indicator signal locations, CORVETTE on the rear plastic bumper between the tail lights, wraparound cockpit, overall look of the original wheels with the cut outs that look almost identical to 928S wheels...I could go on and on...
