Default Can you upgrade a regular differential to a limited slip?

So I've been driving my 928 for over 20 years now and I've been pretty happy with it except for one thing...

I was wondering if I could upgrade my regular differential to a limited slip one. Is this something my mechanic could do?

You can swap them. No other way to get an LSD as the differentials are built completely different.

As mentioned above it can be done with a complete unit. You need to keep the ring from your old differential. The bearings should be changed too WYAIT. Most used 40% LSDs have worn friction discs, so they have to be changed too. The tricky part for a regular mechanic will be the exact adjustment (backlash) of the new differential. It requieres some experience and a lot of patience.

Thanks for this. I got an LSD as part of a big heap of other stuff. But I hate taken the gearbox out again. I suppose this is needed.

There is no need to take out the gearbox. There should be enough room, especially with a 5 speed. If you replace the bearings and keep the old spacers, there is a good chance that your R&P position will be close enough. I would measure the backlash of the old R&P and see what it is with the new LSD unit.
BTW if you are going for it, get a 20 mm socket before. The ring is bolted to the differential with these unique bolts. AFAIK you'll need 20 mm sockets nowhere else in our cars.

I replaced the R&P in my GTS with a S4 unit....

If I remember correctly,Carl used to sell a kit to make a posi out of a standard rear,do not know how it worked but he sold them for quite a while.
