Can you upgrade a regular differential to a limited slip?
So I've been driving my 928 for over 20 years now and I've been pretty happy with it except for one thing...
I was wondering if I could upgrade my regular differential to a limited slip one. Is this something my mechanic could do?

As mentioned above it can be done with a complete unit. You need to keep the ring from your old differential. The bearings should be changed too WYAIT. Most used 40% LSDs have worn friction discs, so they have to be changed too. The tricky part for a regular mechanic will be the exact adjustment (backlash) of the new differential. It requieres some experience and a lot of patience.

There is no need to take out the gearbox. There should be enough room, especially with a 5 speed. If you replace the bearings and keep the old spacers, there is a good chance that your R&P position will be close enough. I would measure the backlash of the old R&P and see what it is with the new LSD unit.
BTW if you are going for it, get a 20 mm socket before. The ring is bolted to the differential with these unique bolts. AFAIK you'll need 20 mm sockets nowhere else in our cars.
I replaced the R&P in my GTS with a S4 unit....
