Default whining noise from trans

since owning my 86 there has allways been a whining noise which sounded like a supercharger/turbine spooling up proportional to the engine speed. i thought the noise was engine related and somebody posted about this a while back that it could be to do with the shape of the timing belt teeth.

since removing my rear seats and console it is apparent that the noise is coming from towards the back of the car, either transmission or torque tube. i dont know much about either of these, does anyone know what this is?

the noise seems to comes in at around 3000rpm and gets higher pitched as the revs rise, it sounds metalic, distinct but not obtrusive and high pitched like something turning very fast.

We have a local GTS which has had its transmission (auto) opened up and various pump etc parts replaced and still it whines. Works fine but whines. Only option open at this point is replacing the tranny completely.

Mine does the samething. I'm going to have the tranny fluid changed but I don't that will get rid of the noise.

Where are the TT bearings?

2 Sets for Auto, 3 for 5 speed.

Ill put my money on torque converter bearings for sure. The problem with that is...you might as well do the TT bearings as well. It takes just as much work to get to them.

Could also be the input bearing for the transmission. When's the last time you've done a fluid replacement?

what mode of failure do the tourque converter bearings employ? ie what happens next if its them, or the input bearing?

tranny fluid was changed aprox 24k prior.

I have had the same type of whining from my rear for years. Never got any worse or better. I had a replacement tranny and a TT and I run Redline synthetic.
It only affects a certain range and then goes away.
I have just learned to live with it....

Cheers

Replace the fluid and check for shavings. That'll at least help rule out the transmission.

I almost think the sound is an added bonus. My GF says the car sounds like the batmobile or some jet. I drove a stupid pickup for years and I don't mind the sound one bit. To the passenger its sounds like hells fury is at your disposal.

the car is due for servicing so i will get the trans fluid/filter changed and let you all know if theres anything in there.

hopefully all is otherwise well and i just have the noise, which i agree sounds wicked!
