Default Hardware for 90- Steering Column Cover

Hi everyone,

I got a new 90- steering column, however i could not find in PET the hardware required for mounting/securing it. There are 4 bolt/screw holes from the front and 2 from the sides in addition to locking washers to be installed on the lower sides (as I saw on some pictures). Can anyone help identifying the missing parts? Thanks for any help.

Here's a layout of all the hardware for the gauge cluster and the steering column shroud for a '91 S4, should be identical to '90. Apologies, I don't have exact measurements of all the pieces.

Thank you Rob. Now let us see how to source those screws and bolts.

If I get the chance tonight I can pull one of each from my '93 and measure them for you.

The black tapping screw hardware that Porsche used is all DIN 7983 standard stuff. Below is a pic of one of the Wurth tapping screw selections at the industrial hardware store here in California. At least some of the screws you need for the steering column shrouds are probably smaller than 3.5 mm, probably 2.9 x 9, if I had to guess. Will measure tonight.

Yes, the aluminum S-shaped curve and the angular cast-aluminum brackets are unique to the 90-95 airbag cars. Good pics of their use in this thread by Schocki:

Rob,

I am going ROW setup so no airbag but digital dash (89) and updated instrument box (90-). Will connect the wiring to the lower switches to the side controllers for dimming and wiper speed accordingly, so probably won’t need the brackets… i hope

Scratch my previous comment. I will need them since they hold the 90- cluster in place

You have a slightly challenging mix of years to consider to make sure you have smooth sailing- 90-95 steering column, 90-95 gauge pod, 89 digidash, sitting on top of an '87 dash?

The column, pod and digidash will all work together (and you will need those aluminum brackets), I just wonder whether there might be any gaps around the pod/dash interface. Probably not, but am not 100% sure.

I have an S4 and an airbag pod at home, will line them up against each other tonight to confirm they're the same external dimensions. Obviously the digidash cluster is identical 89-95 dimensionally, so it should mount inside the airbag pod just fine.

Rob,

I am keeping the original steering columns as is - as per PET for the RoW non airbag cars it is the same. The difference is the pod where up to 89 it was the same but 90- they made a change where the controls for dimmer and wiper speed are front facing (I will hack the 89 dash harness for that). But you are right, those brackets are needed for the 90- cover. All else should be plug and play I believe at this point.

Rob,

here is an example of a 1991 RoW interior with no airbag as a reference of my plan for the car.

Did a little research starting with the 964 stalks and ended up with a Porsche general diagram with more details than the one in the 928 PET. As expected there are 3 parts:

Item 4: Speed Nut (M2 - 2.9) - 99959188802

Item 6: Screw (M2 2.9 x 9.5) - 90014300207

Item 5: Screw (M3 - 3.5 x 19) - 99907305002
Screw (M3 - 3.5 x 9.5) - 99907304702
