In Cairns, tropical Queensland, Australia, we still have central parking, down the middle of the street, at right angles to traffic direction. Nice wide streets still in most Queensland towns...I like to park in that centre parking, with a tree next to me. The tree is essential for both distancing the next car, but also for shade. The only trouble with the shade is the droppings from the fruit bats and prolific birdlife... or brushing against a green ants nest...
How do you tell if someone's from Cairns? They don't park closest to their intended venue, but wherever the best shade happens to be, regardless of a couple of blocks walking. I've got back into the car and it's 42 degrees C. inside...
And my Air Con still doesn't blow cold
But I'm working on it, and have a heater valve on the way, to start with...
Apart from some rare parallel-to-the-curb parking, our other main parking here is angle (angel?) parking next to the footpath (sidewalk?), which always seems to beckon the front spoiler or whatever it's called... I've noticed that the Japanese often have a flag mast at each corner of the car, so they can guide their beast in... although now we have the option of adding to our electrical complexity to help 'see' the corners of the car...
As a few of you know, I've only had the car less than a couple of months, and it came keyed right across the passenger door, and shopping-cart- bruised across the bum, a courtesy to the past owner whilst he was parked in a shopping centre.
Actually, it's my wife's car, anyway, and I just get the pleasure of daily driving it and maintaining it. She gets the pleasure of owning (and paying for) it and being chaffuered, and driving it about one day a week. It's not a bad life...
Mind you, when I washed it last week I noticed that the back passenger wheel had been curbed, and crumbled a few pieces out of it, one as big as a couple of dimes. Neither of us knew anything about it, but I know there are no curbs where I choose to park... Seems like I'll be looking for another wheel when I next change two tyres...
When we first got it a funny little parking scene happened. I'm noticeably older that her... Freshly new to us, I parked the Shark in the center of town on a busy Saturday morning with a deep sense of satisfaction about me... She had been gardening for about three days straight, and so was very stiff and sore-muscled. Picture the looks on bystanders faces as the older bugger (only 54) got out of the Shark looking pleased with himself, and the younger women struggled out of the Porsche and then could hardly walk. If only they really knew...!
I'm seriously entertaining the idea of keeping a car-cover in the car at all times, and throwing it on when the parking looks dicey. I reckon there's less chance of getting keyed then for a start. And I reckon that People don't have to know what sort of car it is unless I'm sitting in it... Trouble is, I'm not convinced about this idea. Any thoughts?

Phill,
When you said, "Picture the looks on bystanders faces as the older bugger (only 54) got out of the Shark looking pleased with himself, and the younger women struggled out of the Porsche and then could hardly walk. If only they really knew...!"
It's not what the know, it's what they think!
If you could have convince your bride to coyly wink at you while beaming ear to ear in her best Mona Lisa impression while struggling with walking - the 'stock value' of all male shark drivers would be sure to rise in the eyes of younger females ( perhaps the reverse would also be true?). See what you can do next time, OK?

I park as far away as possible from other cars, almost always. Unless it's very hot, then I park as far away as possible in the shade.
One day I was a little lazy and parked nearer the entrance to the supermarket, as I reached the store I turned back to look at the car (as you do) and saw a driver pull up alongside, allowing no more than 10" between the cars. I was horrified as a 250+ pound driver then attempted to get out of the car, I ran back hoping that the door rubbing strip would do it's job, and then asked why the driver felt it was neccessary to park so close (this is the UK, so I wasn't too concerned about getting shot).
I've learnt my lesson and now I park in the corners again.
PS why am I posting to such an old thread? Because I was checking Lag's old posts to remind myself about the contribution he has made in the past

I read somewhere that people tend to park in clusters. Has nothing to do with your nice car parked out in the boonies. You could park a junker out in left field and it would invariably be surrounded when you got back.

I just avoid cars that look like the owner clearly doesn't care and also avoid squeezing into spaces next to cars that can't seem to fit between the lines. Otherwise, I just park near to where I'm going like any normal person. My car has never suffered door dings or keying.

BY RANDY: If you want your car to be keyed, the best way to guarantee that is to park at an angle, or use two spaces - even if it's out in the boonies.

If I stop at a quick-stop for a drink or whatever, I park at the pumps even if I'm not getting gas.
If at a large store, I look at three factors:
1. The highest point in the parking lot.
2. A place that no one else is parking but in view (semi-BFE).
3. Wind direction and speed.
Parking up hill will keep those nasty carts from rolling into your car and if the parking lot is level, parking up-wind will also do. Parking in semi-BFE allows one to take up two parking spots.

My biggest pet peave is people who like to park across two parking spaces, are they thinking that they are protecting their car? What ever the case, It implies that they think they are better than everyone else! I certianly love my 928 but would never dream of taking two spaces where one would do, it's just asking for trouble. As a matter of fact if i am driving my old S10 truck and i see someone parked like that they will be getting in their car from the passenger side or the sunroof when they return because they won't be able to slip a credit card between their driver's side door and the side of my truck. Nothing pisses me off more!

Does anyone have some sort of formula that has evolved from your experiences of -the kinds of vehicles to avoid. Do you park at an angel> Do you avoid Mini-vans and trucks? How about dirty cars ? How about ricers, how about very expensive cars .Do you go so far as writing down the plate #'s of the ones next to you?,not me
or do you get your exercise for the day by parking over the horizon. Have a good day. Mike. Curiouser and Curiouser.

As the car cannot contain many groceries etc I would leave it at home and take the truck.........no worries where I park the crew cab long box 4x4 3/4 ton, the only concern is navigating through the traffic, its a little long!

I always park out in the middle of nowhere only to return and find some smart *** in a mini-van that decided to park next to me. Makes me feel like kicking the door in on their car, but I never do.
