My post back then was as useless as this one.....but it did get me to log in. Thanks, Jeff! It was fun to rejoin the 928 forum, if even for just a few minutes.

I miss 928 ownership. *sniff*

Then it might be a long time... You might have to settle for Riviera Blue, Horizon Blue Metallic, or Midnight Blue... I did!

Or the very rare 91 Amazon Green GT. Why have a car that always looks the same color when Amazon Green can look blue to green to black depending on light.

Imagine if you had bought an 86 Corvette. That would really be problems.

Yep, I saw the date but felt that if someone was searching PPI they might come across this thread and I haven't seen anything to counter the advice of "if you can't do it yourself you shouldn't own the car".

Sorry to dig up the dead.

I love it when 6 year old threads pop up and people answer them like they were just posted! LOL

Doing a PPI yourself, if it is your first 928, is dumb. Let me state that again, from personal experience.

The first time you see your prospective 928, you will be seeing the car of your dreams. It is the car you bought posters of and put on your wall as a kid. Maybe you owned a matchbox version. Or you went down to the Porsche dealership at night, pressed your nose on the glass, and saw the gleaming red shark on the showroom floor, saying, "Someday, some way, I will have you."

Now you see her, up close and personal. The paint is beautiful, even after 25 years. Ol' Ferry really knew how to paint a car, didn't he? So you get in the car, and the battery's dead. The current owner, so helpful says, "oh, I left the battery hooked up overnight, I'll jump it for you, it's just a minor short." A minor short? Yeah, but so what? Helga,(Yes, you named the car as soon as your saw her), though she's still a hottie, is getting a little older, but you won't kick her out of bed for eating crackers, right? Anyway, it's just a short. Let's ding the current owner a couple of benjis for that. It's probably easy to track down anyway, because Helga, your Helga, wouldn't let you down, would she?

It's a warm day, and you turn on the AC, and get a blast of warm air. "Oh, the AC is kind of iffy. 928's have a pretty good climate control, but it's a bitch to work on." Bitch?! Did that b@st@rd call Helga, your Helga, a bitch? He doesn't deserve to own this car. Yeah, it'll cost a few bucks, but it should be easy to get it running, right? Ok, let's start offering him few bucks less for that too, and another sawbuck, for calling your Helga a bitch.

Then you look at the temp gauge on the cracked dash(hey, even Sofia Loren got wrinkles when she got old, right?) . It's starting to creep up a little past the halfway point, and you smell some of Helga's perfume. Helga's a hot blooded girl, isn't she? "Yeah, well, it's a little warm out today. When it gets warm, I top off the radiator a bit. Must be due." Yes, it must be due, you cold-blooded b@st@rd!

So you stop, pull over, and negotiate. You've gone through everything in the PPI at this point. Yes, he was offering 15K, but you offer 13, because there might be a little work getting Helga to look all pretty. He says he won't go under 14. You can't let him keep Helga. You must have her. So you say, yes, and you and helga ride off into the sunset.

And that's how you wound up paying 14K for a car that needs a new AC compressor, new radiator, timing belt service, climate control unit, and wind up spending every waking moment for the next year and a half tracking down shorts in the hatch release, driver's seat, dashboard, dome light, and various and sundry other places.

And that's when you call Helga a bitch.

[QUOTE=john bono;7210046]Doing a PPI yourself, if it is your first 928, is dumb. Let me state that again, from personal experience.

Yep and that is why I posted on a thread this old. There are still (one currently looking to buy a way overpriced one) people who are new to sharks. Heck, I took a 15 year break.

Do a search on PPI and there wasn't anyone out there countering some advice that if you can't do the PPI yourself then you shouldn't own the car. Some people who can do a PPI might live too far away to do the PPI, thus it is perfectly acceptable to pay someone to spend 4 -5 hours going over the car and telling you just what is wrong.

I knew it was an old post but the topic is still relevant and there are still newbies who don't know how to search or read just a few posts and then give up on the search because what they are looking for "isn't there".

These require parts and maintenance labor. That translates to money or money + personal time. Prepare for it.

Something broke, but I just kept on driving. Something else broke too, but I ignored it, and kept driving. Now it won't run, the pig...

These cars really are such POS's.

Naw, not quite like that.
They're 20 to 30 years old.
Hard to expect new-car service from them.
Just don't go pollyanna on it.

I think they are far more finicky than other cars I have owned and currently own. At least as far as my 81 goes.
