Oops! After re-reading my post, I can see where some of you think I have NO car experience. Actually, I've owned lots of Porsches in my life (I'm 36 yrs old). I've had a 924S, a 944, a 944S, a 944S2, three or four 951s, 2 968 cabs and probably 7 or 8 911s (from an '80 SC through the reasonable progression of 84-89 cars, a couple of 964s, thus my ID of Oilslick964, and even onel 993 cab) This is my first 928. I don't do my own work (aside from oil changes, etc...) so you are all correct, I don't need to be owning a 928. The 944s and even the 944/951s seemed a lot less tempermental. I still love the look and sound of the car, though
Thanks for all your advice and please, don't be mad at me for being frustrated, it's just my personality!

Ron H- it is an auto, it is black with tan leather, 94k miles (odo shows 24k but it was changed at 70k) It is just an '86. It has the flat slotted dish wheels. Sure, come get it. I'll make you a heck of a deal!
You too ViribisUnits!

Paul (oil slick964) based on your comments some 25 or so Porsche cars have passed through your hands by age 36 . Obviously you are not into long term relationships and the first bit of trouble is justification to dump the current one and go find a "new " one which will not let you down or betray and disappoint you . Now that you have had the current one it is time to be looking , thinking planning for the next ; even while still with this one you "Had" to get two others ; none of which are the one you REALLY want ........ I believe you may have a problem with commitment and face the prospect of growing old alone never having know the pleasures of a deep long lasting relationship .............just a bunch of one night stands .

Wow!

Jim, that was some serious Freud.

Some people pay a lot of money for that kind of couch session!

I think you are lying, how do you manage to forget how many 951's or 911's you have owned?

sweanders,
Are you being serious or are you just joking? Truth is, I trade cars 2 or 3 times a year. Do you want me to get a more accurate count? I'll assume you are just making a joke and not calling me a liar, right?

I had similar feelings about my 928 in the first few years of ownership. There always seems to be something breaking, or leaking, or that stops working. I just kept fixing the problems, and fixing the problems, and now, years later, I have everything fixed. So the car is now working like a new car. It just takes time and money to get a 928 back to perfect condition. Those old parts will have problems. Unless you want to do a lot of maintanance and repair yourself, or do a restoration, an older 928 will not be a problem-free car. It is a great car, no matter how old. It's just that the older it is, the more work you will need to put into it to get it back up to the condition of a new car. Seriously, just the electrics alone, if you want everything running perfectly, you might as well replace all the switches in an old car. Because there is no way those things will still be working perfectly, after so many years. Same goes for all the vaccuum lines in the engine compartment, the AC solenoids, etc... There is a lot of stuff to replace, if you want everything to work perfectly. So, as many people have suggested, you will save money by buying a 90's era 928, or just buying a new car of some other make. But you won't have the style, handling, and power, of a 928. You just have to consider the maintainance a trade-off for having such a cool car...

Not joking, it just doesn't seem right.

I have no clue how many shirts or pair of socks I own, but I can remember all of my cars I have owned through all of my life. I even have a fresh list in my head over all of the girls I've had sex with. I may have forgotten some of the names but I remember them all.

Must you pay a car transfer tax in AK? here in PA its 6%. maybe you should not trade for a year and apply the savings to the 928.

My 86.5 had 71K on the clock when I bought it, cost to bring maintance up to date, replace all the items that were age sensitive, and fix the things that were not working cost about 10K, me and my car (big red) will have a long and happy relationship....I hope

these cars must be driven often for many reasons

Paul,

The 928 is a simple car with simple systems - basically the same level of complication of a 3-5 year later Japanese product.

Unfortunately, Porsche isn't Honda/Toyota. German electronics and wiring (which were the standard of the world before/after the US blew it) have also ceded the crown to the Japanese. I know more than a few mid-late 80's Hondas with all the power doo-dads that are on a 928 - 'cept their power systems all work, have never had a new window switch (let alone number 4, or whatever I'm on) and they too have covered in excess of 200K miles. Hell, even my 500SEL (of the 84 vintage) went over 250K miles on the original window switches and no oil leaks.

So what? This is not real work, it's a fuse or a relay or getting your a/c charged or something. For a sports car that doesn't say 'NSX' on the tail, this is very, very small potatoes. And the NSX eats tires like a 928 GTS eats oil.

So what? The engine and most systems still function like a train, and none of the 'problems' you describe qualifies as mildly serious. Esp. for somebody who parks cars for months at a time - you need to learn to expect this behaviour, or buy something with points, plugs, manual everything and no a/c. Or, get a brand-new car, run it into the ground until the warranty expires, then trade it on a new one.

Yeah, sure 928 can leak way too much oil for a car that's 20 years old (once again, see: Honda/Toyota). It's nothing compared to a V12 BMW at 8 years old. Really.

Perhaps if you quit spending money trading cars, you could scrape enough together to lease a new one. Boxters go for about $500 a month, 911 variants around $800. Then you just walk-away, which it seems is what your looking for.

Good luck,

Greg

OK sweanders, here is the real list (just Porsches):

1987 924S 10k, guards/black(my parents bought this for me in early 1988. I was 19. I sold to a buddy who still has it!)

1986 944 64k black/black(I bought in Aug. 1989 traded up in '91)

1987 944S 88k black/linen(bought around 1991 traded in had for a while, then I got my first 911!)

1980 911 96k gold/linen(traded the 44S in late '92, hated the color but a really nice car. Owned it the longest of all my cars.)

1986 951 94k garnet/linen(bought in early 1995 drove for about 4 months.)

1987 951 82k black/linen(Dorve to KC to get this one in the summer of 1995. Liked the airbag dash, but hated the late offset wheels.)

1989 C4 61k guards/black(Bought in Tulsa in 1996. Had some nice mods. Bought from John Reaves. I highly recommend him as a great wrench too!)
1992 968 cab amethyst/grey (traded the C4 in 1998. This was also from Reaves.)

1994 968 cab midnight/tan (I sold my purple 968 and couldn't live without another one. In late 1998 Reaves found me another one!)

1984 911 targa guards/black (I had this car for 3 months in 1999. Not too impressed, but it was tight.)

1986 951 94k guards/black (Very nice car, I went to Florida to get it in the winter of 2000 Sold it on Ebay after about 6 months, just got bored.)

1989 951 72k black/black (This was a really nice car that I had for almost a year in 2000-2001. Sold it to Jason in Florida and I think he is still enjoying it.)

1987 911 targa 68k guards/black (bought locally in March of 2001 Hated the targa)

1992 C4 55k amethyst/black (I bought this car sight unseen on Ebay in 2001. It exceeded my expectations. This was a cool car. )

1997 Boxster black/red 30k (Bought a Jackie Cooper in Tulsa in the summer of 2002. Liked it, but got tired of people calling it a chick car.)

1991 C4 cab 91k guards/tan (Bought from our local school superintendant in the late fall of 2002. Drove it until it was about to go over 100k and sold it on Ebay to 2 brothers who planned to share it. I don't know how that worked out.)

1991 C2 cab-tip 48k amethyst/grey (Bought from John Reaves in the summer of 2003. The tiptronic drove me crazy, I like to shift a 911 so I sold it to a guy in Dallas.)

1986 928S 93k Black/tan (bought in October 2003. My current headache!)

1997 Boxster 44k Black/black (Bought as a my everyday driver in January 2004. Forgot what a chick car they are so I sold it and bought my current Jaguar XJR)

See, I do remember. I just haven't sat down and figured it out in a long time. It brought back some good memories doing it now! The early dates may be a bit off, but the later ones are correct. Now, if you ask me about the women I have slept with, there is no way I could put that list together.

Oilslick,
If you would have stuck it out alittle longer, you would have gotten to the best part of the 928 ownership.
Some people just cant make up their minds.....

I think a good idea would be to donate the car to a disabled vet.
Just so happens, I have someone in mind........

Oilslick you stated the cause of your problems in the very first post, and you stated it categorically and repeatedly, I lost count how many times you told us exactly what causes these gremlins:

I park the car <in January> in the garage and do not drive it for 2 months....
I've only put about 800 miles on it all together....
I break the 928S out again in March when the weather starts getting nice....
I drive it about 200 miles over the course of 3 weeks...
I park the car, again! ...
I have owned this thing for 8 months, driven 1200 miles and .... "

Guess what? I drove the car yesterday and today and I'll be darned if I see any oil leak! There must be something to this "needs to be driven" theory! I took it to a local shop to have the AC looked at and to have the rough running issue addressed. If they don't find anything obvious, I'll run some of the good stuff through the tank and drive the crap out of it this weekend. I'll give the Jag a rest. I plan to go get the S2 tomorrow, so I may have 2 Porsches for while (not the worst problem to have). I'll mess around with this 928 for a bit longer, I guess, before I throw in the towel. Guess I'll have a fuse checking party on Sunday. My wife will love that for Mothers Day!

Quick Reply: I am so DONE with my 928S!!!!!
