Asking price of Project 928

Asking price of Project 928
hey dudes,
I'm interested in a 1986 928S, with 79k miles. Asking price is under 5k so I went to check it out, here's my report out:
Exterior:
- Paint is pretty good where it doesn't have issues. Looks great on one side from 10' away.
- Paint is shot on roof, hatch, passenger door, lower edge of drivers door, and front passenger fender has a big dent
- Chrome wheels are peeling on one side
- Front tires are shot, on cords, so no road test possible
- Missing front splitter and passenger duct
Interior:
- Both front seats are torn/deteriorating
- Shifter leather is shredded
- Dash is cracked
Mechanical:
- Starts right up, sounds good
- No visible leaks
- Fuel pump is on a toggle switch
No service records, same family has owned it for 20 years or so.
I know it's close to a parts car at this point... but I kind of want to make an offer on it & save it. What would you price it at?
So far I've found seats ($2000), front splitter ($540), front duct ($130), timing belt/waterpump kit ($850), wheels w tires ($800), which would leave mainly the paint work, I'm guessing I could tackle it myself for under $2000.
Thoughts on price? Guy said he was open to offers.

Is it a 5-speed or auto? What are the last 4 digits of the VIN? If 1000 or later then that is a 86.5 and has some desirable upgrades eventually incorporated o the S4.
At this point, any 928 under $5K is worth considering, if just for the parts value alone. Your $2K estimate for parts (or maybe that was just for paint?) is going to be about 5x more once you get into it and really want it to be a reliable daily driver. Beyond what you have listed the following parts are a must:

Your $2K estimate for parts (or maybe that was just for paint?) is going to be about 5x more once you get into it and really want it to be a reliable daily driver. Beyond what you have listed the following parts are a must:
- All rubber fuel lines (fire hazard)
- Power steering lines (fire hazard)
- Injectors (either new or rebuilt)
- Relays, relays, relays (replace them all now or wait until one fails on the road, ask many of us how we know)
- Brakes likely need replaced
- Fuel pump and filter (toggle switch sounds like it has a bad pump relay at a minimum)
- Air filter, oil filter
- Change oil and coolant
- New battery (by the description of the car I doubt it's less than 5 years old)
- Rubber vaccum lines. Basically anything rubber under the hood will need replaced.

How many 86.5 came with a LSD? Is it just me or is that more rare than not?
EDIT: its an '85 not an '86. Still rare perhaps?

Auto. VIN is WP0JB0923FS861527. I tried to find a VIN decoder for the 928 but couldn't really find much. Is there more info about what you mentioned with the S4 upgrades?
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...er-86-a-2.html
But as Rob shows, the car you are looking at is an '85. Still a desirable year as it is the first year for the 928 to get the 5L/32V engine. Known as the S3 in some circles. That engine was only available for two model years and has some parts that are less available than on early and later cars.

Hmm- the car's an automatic transmission or a 5-speed? The VIN you posted was originally a 5-speed.

So.... what's the deal on value tho? At this point... I mean... it needs a lot. But it runs. Honestly it's real close to being a parts car... I'm just wondering if I tackle the body and paint myself, I could not be too far underwater.

And you took no photos..and want input?
I would offer $2000 minus the cost of towing it.

Sorry, I have some photos here:

Couple other things i remembered since looking at the photos:
- Rear passenger quarter had a small dent above rear wheel, I popped it out when I was there but I don't think it's perfect
- Speaker grilles do not look original, held on with big phillips screws
- One of the intake hoses was a generic chopped up radiator hose, not a molded intake hose with the ribbing for the clamps
- Front fender, driver's side, has been repainted already. Not sure why.
Hard to place a value on something without being able to drive it.

I just see like... $6k in parts/materials alone to get this to a decent point... and then what would it be worth, with a repainted door, fender, and roof/hatch? Miles are low... but not especially desirable version or anything.

You're in for $15k by the time you are 'done' then another $5k will show up..it will never truly end.
I'm maybe $50k in, and not done. The big stuff is done, but now the fine details on things are the weekend jobs being a daily driver.

So like.... if i don't want to wind up way underwater, what is a good price for this? It looks great from far away... the problem is half the car needs paint. And it's been repainted on 1 corner already. And it's been sitting, needs wheels, tires, who knows what else.
