I think youd be shocked by how much you CAN see on it's screen, if you had one.
All you need is point to point, unless you're like an Uber driver that has to stare at a map every foot of the way.
In the 928 I agree in my 911 the screen is useless and I need the cell phone mount to see the actual screen. I am trying to see if I can grab the last. one they have in stock.
I guess technology has conditioned us to need these things. Years ago I was able to get around without any aids. LOL

Eh..I can still get most anywhere reviewing a Thomas Map for 5min..
I like the Waze guidance for LE, traffic, and hints. Just a glance is all it takes.

I was in a private community with 44 miles of roads the other day. All the streets are named nearly the same. Any help is nice and not having the car phone mount makes this a nicer option. They don't sell maps for places like this but nav works. LOL
Like everything, once you post, the trolls came out to feed. Price too high, screen to small, etc. Yet, no one has any compunction paying $1,200 for a china cellphone with 3-yr lifecycle and giving it to an 8-yr old. But I digress...
I am a little in the same position as you. I've got a Nakamichi 5 cd changer deck in my 91 GT and it fits in the car with minimal bling. Installed by the previous owner.
I was sceptical at first and bought the Blaupunkt SQR 46 DAB for the car. But the NAK deck has grown on me and after 4 years I haven't changed it out yet.
I bought three of these, one for the gts, one for my 79 and one for my 88 turbo cab. I got it installed in the turbo cab first and am not that impressed. First, the screen is way to small and second, is it just me or does the CarPlay work only when the phone is plugged in? If that is the case, I’m going to return the other two.

Yes..thats how not extremely new car play works. You can get a wireless kit out there, a number of them.
It seems small, but evaluate if you are staring at it (bad) or referencing it (good). I don't have good eyes, and it tells me what I need to know at a glance. I USE you realize it's not that bad, just that we're used to TV monitors for radios in our cars anymore...
I agree the technology for the $$ isn't that great. Many limitations vs some of the lesser expensive units out there. I installed a Pioneer double din in a friends Cayman it had wireless connectivity for apple carplay has additional features warning you of upcoming hazards and RR crossings you can turn on/off and a rear camera. Although the rear camera repalced the license plate light and wasn't remotely correct bulb type. Crutchfield finally figured it out and sent a replacement bulb and holder to work with the system. Although it requires modifying the harness. It was nicer in most respects and cheaper. To me the aesthetics aren't there. I prefer to have it look proper in this car. It will be better than the vintage Motorola phone from the 90's taking up real estate but I have to leave that as is.
I know the shortcomings of the unit and I have no issue plugging in my phone. I have to do it in my 18 Macan GTS. I am just looking for hands free driving and simple navigation. It is a lot of money to spend on a technically inferior system but for the 1000 miles or less I drive the car each year it will do what I need. Not my best rationalization but I'm sticking with it LOL. I am also used to the system in the Macan so it is easier for me to navigate than if I had never used it before. Porsche and intuitive are two words I don't use in the same sentence.
I have no info on the next gen I asked my son and he has no clue. Just told me they had two left in stock and won't be getting anymore anytime soon. I will start the harness build this weekend it should be an easy swap once it is done. The biggest issues are the antennas and microphone.
Did anyone find an adapter to fit the stock harness? I was considering just using spade connectors and inserting them into the existing harness which is not the best approach or removing the connector properly and keeping it with the CD-2 in a box for future caretakers. I can use any connector then and not cut the wires.
About price... American dealers bend us over. Mine is US spec and I ordered it through my local German Porsche dealer at the time (in Kaiserslautern) and it was 828 euro. That included a 20% VAT that was later removed because I was US military. So all in, less than 700 euro. Factor in euro-to-dollar conversion and it was probly $850. This all happened while they were selling in the US for $1,200+ Not that $850 is anything to write home about - but in comparison, it cost about the same as two rear sun visor clips <lol>
I know no one asked, but I decided to go old school with my '84 Euro. I found a nice Denon DCT-950R cd head unit, and plan to power some old made in USA Soundstream amps with it. Will have to use a Bluetooth adapter if I want any remotely "modern" features I guess.
