Exactly. This is the sixth produced for the 1989 Model-Year (Letter K).
For the cars, the first production engine was number 0061 and number below were prototypes or preproduction, but I don't know if the same applies to these marine engines.
No idea also of the CR and camshafts of these engines.

I’ll post more pictures a bit later and tell my story on how I ended up with it.

Congratulations - very well bought and used!

Looks like the boat motors had both a different type (M28.23) and a different numbering series.

Factory bulletin 8902 (1/20/1989) specifically says
"For 928 S4 cars, a new cylinder head
PN 928 104 014 03 is installed from
Engine No.: 81 K 00121 Manual Transmission, 81 K05240 Automatic Transmission"

So it seems likely your motor is the 6th boat motor of 1989, likely including any factory-used / test engines, given the engine number series is different than the cars.
Those are 1R heads, on this engine.

No..just noting that they are the early S4 heads, the later ones are preferred, the only difference being a thicker boss less likely to crack when torqued down in the future.

No.
These heads cracked at the base of the radius where the head washers sit.
Porsche superceeded them to a head with different construction, in this area, to eliminate the problem. (2R heads.) This design change continued into the 3R, 4R, and 5R heads.

Worth noting, the 1987 1R heads seem to be less prone to having this cracking occur than the 1988 1R heads. (My observation. We've seen many cracked 1988 heads but have not seen any cracked 1987 heads.)

Engine has been in car for 2 years now, running like a new car. Hauls *** and nothing leaks.

Isn’t that nuts? I think I’ve read only 50 engines were made for boats.

.
I remember reading about the marine project many years ago.
I could be mistaken, but my recollection is that it's way less than 50.
Regardless, it's a VERY cool piece of history.

I'm almost positive that this engine was on auction on eBay in 2019. I know this because I wanted to buy it, and I gave the seller an offer he refused. These are rare to come across. I wanted it for my 928, and I'm glad it went to someone who will use it. The story behind these engines is that a company bought a few of them new from Porsche to make them marine-worthy. I think a total of 3 boats were made with some variation of this engine.

I eventually picked up a 'new' M28/20 engine located in Stuttgart from a guy working at the Porsche factory, and this engine served as a testing engine.
