Default I claim first prize for the worst green wire connector in a running car.

Bought a new green wire and started the installation with the wire harness connector.

No that is not a red slug sitting on the head.

Never seen heat shrink like this, with some kind of glue inside... someone really didn't want to buy a new green wire!

I had to cut the heat shrink off in several pieces because it was so hard and inflexible... and found this

Before installing the new wire I need a new female connector for the wiring harness, so I reconnected it... and the car started normally.

Yes a rebuilt wiring harness is in my future, I plan on making my own. But now I'm afraid to touch the 14 pin connector in case I find something simular.

Wow.

The heat shrink with the adhesive inside is a waterproof version and pretty good stuff when used in the correct application.

I read comments from Mrmerlin imploring us to only use the Porsche sourced green wire... unfortunately I had already ordered the cheaper URO version when I read this. Sure enough the URO wire has a 1/16in space between the white connector that goes into the distributor and the black part of the connector. This prevents the it from seating properly on the exterior of the distributor. So I ordered a wire from Porsche and returned the URO.

The difference is visible on this fuzzy photo. URO on the bottom.

Both new wires had a pesky black piece that was not on the original and doesn't fit anywhere... and is a PITA to remove.

The female connector from the ECU cleaned up nicely, so I didn't have to replace it, as I originally feared. Installation on the distributor was straight forward. As suggested by Mrmerlin I put the engine at TDC, marked the position of the distributor on the boss where the adjustment bolt is, removed the bolt and turned the distributor clockwise till I had access to the two screws. On reassembly I replaced the slot screws in the bracket that holds the green wire in place with 4mm bolts, easier to tighten with a wrench. I routed the cable along the strut support, My thinking is that it will be further from the heat and it won't get in my way when I work on the harness.

Excellent video on changing the green wire in post #14 of this thread. The whole thread is worth the read.

The car started right up and ran just as badly as it did before, but now I know the ignition is not the problem. So I have to get back to the CIS.
