Default What does this relay do?

A 928 owner with a GTS contacted me to see if I had one of the below featured relays in my spare parts bin- I did not. I understand it is located in the central elecrics area but have no idea what it does or where exactly it sits. It sure looks a bit odd ball for a relay looking at the pins on the base.

A bit of googling suggests it may be refered to as an " ignition bypass relay".

A bit of follow up- I now suspect this is the item that takes the place of the iignition monitoring relays on non cat cars. I found an entry in the parts catalogue that describes it as "plug bridge for caars without catalytic converters. The local refinery blended leaded gasoline until something like 1993 so all 928's officially imported for new sale here were all non cat models. A 928s ended up here later on a "grey imports" brought in either from Europe or the States that had cats.

Thus this thing is not a relay but rather a contact bridge that by passes the circuits that support the ignition monitoring relay system- this is shown in the wiring diagrams.

Yes - that is what it is - It replaces the 9 pin ignition monitoring relay. it has just 3 pins and directly connects the output of the Injection relay to both banks of injectors (replaces only the relay switch terminals). It ignores all the 6 input side connections used in the monitoring relay.

What threw me initially was the owner only sent me a photo of the item calling it a relay bu it would be a very strange relay with only three pins! But then with a 928 part number i figured it may be mentioned somewhere in the parts listing and sure enough I found the part number in the relay section and the description gave it away. My 928's both had this configuration but i have never had to touch them as there is nothing to go wrong.

The owner thinks there is something wrong becuase he could not find this part on the 2nd of the two 928's he owns and is restoring. I suspect the GTS in question was imported and may well be a cat equipped model. Should know a bit more tomorrow.
