And take lots of pics of #1 and the last 928
Years ago the gas pedal failed on a C6 race car I was pit crewing for (throttle by wire). We went up and down the parking lot looking for a similar car, found one and borrowed his gas pedal for the race.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! I've updated the list above.

I know it's a stretch but on the scenic route, cell service goes away for long stretches. Is there anyway you could swing a sat phone as part of your gear?

newhillgarage.com Cayman Road Trip 4 part series linked on the home page
No Sat phone. May bring a spare cell though.

I got some foam pads I can use for laying on. Good suggestion. Thanks!

Good one. I have a smaller pair I can bring.

Cash
Checks
Fuel pump relay jumper.
12v air pump
Tire plug kit (I prefer the mushroom style)
Valve stem cores
Tire pressure gauge
Consider a cheap TPMS system. Valve stem caps, cigarette lighter receiver.
If you're driving through areas with no cell service, consider a SPOT messenger
Paper maps
Oil
Water (for you and the car)
Knife or multitool
Microfibers or rags that you don't mind getting dirty and throwing away later
Work gloves (sometimes things are hot but you don't want to wait for them to cool down to effect a repair)
Disposable gloves
A couple of trash bags to store dirty things (tools, clothes, rags, etc).
A change of clothes specifically for working on things.
Flares
If you have room, consider a 2x6 or similar board for under the jack if you have to use it on gravel.
If you have room, consider an old blanket for laying on if you have to get under the car. Not just for your comfort, but to catch things that fall and a clean place to lay parts/fasteners.
All good stuff here. Never heard of a SPOT messenger. Will have to look into that.

Fortunately, all the flammable fluid carrying rubber hoses have been replaced within the last 5 years. Though it probably doesn't hurt to carry some spare hose and clamps to avert Murphy!

Lol. Agree, but I have a rooftop cargo carrier I'm installing. My goal will be to carry everything on the list in a way that I still have full visibility out of the rear glass.

I actually did this when I went down to Sharktoberfest in 2019. 1900 mile round trip and no issues. But don't want to tempt fate on this much longer excursion.

That's the hope! Now if I can figure out how to load up a spare engine and tranny...

I travel with a basic set of tools (1/4" & 3/8" sockets & wrenches in 8-19mm, various screwdrivers and pliers, a set of allen keys), and basic electrical stuff (a multimeter, wire pliers, a few crimp connectors, a roll of electrical tape, some short lengths of wire, a full set of fuses and a couple of the common relays). I also have nitrile and work gloves. I generally have a jump pack along.

I also have a small speed jack from HF, and a 1/2" breaker bar with a 19mm impact socket.

The jack is critical. You can have every tool in the world, but they're useless if you can't get under the car.
Yeah, I need to find a decent, compact, and lightweight jack. Don't want to rely on the OEM one that came with our cars.

Maybe we should create a black list. In the GMC motor home community there is a list, state by state, of other GMC'ers willing to help on short notice. The list is extensive, the help is always forthcoming with food, shelter, parts and road side repairs. Often a call for help goes out on one of the FB groups and there's always a helpful reply with someone on the black list. I'm on the black list and have yet to receive a call becasue not many GMC'er make their way to NYC. This might be a good add-on for the 928 OC. In any case, I keep a considerable about of spare parts at hand but seldom hesitate to travel because I know if I get in a Jam I can send up the bat signal. (get out the black list PDF)

Here's what I take for the 928.

1. Hose splicers, 5/8, 3/4 and 3/8, 1/4 and what ever the upper rad size is. Doesn't take up much space as they can nest inside one another.
2. 1 quarts of motor oil.
3. Roll of mechanics wire, useful to hang loose items, exhaust etc, and to fashion make shift hose clamps.
4. Small container of brake fluid
5. A Leatherman Wave on your person. (belt)
6. Fuses and make shift test lamp
7. At least 2 spare relays. 1 normal, 1 soldered up in the closed position for testing and for use in a jam.
8, small roll of electrical wire 12GA.
9. Fuel filter
10. USB solar high capacity battery bank (cell phone charger)
11. Latex Gloves
12. USB cell charger with volt meter.
13. Jumper cables but I might replace these with a lithium jump pack soon.
14. 1 page Print out of the relay and fuse list.
15. Uber Account
16. roll of electrical tape.

I generally dont bring many spare tools. Once I got in a jam on a road trip with a Jaguar I engine swapped. Alternator died, called an Uber to an Autozone to buy items i needed. Alternator was warranted, tools were returned so that mishap cost me nothing but a few hours. The Uber driver Loved the Jag and didn't charge me.

When you road trip you want to tilt the board your way... for example, try to travel when cool and along routes that have good services such as auto parts stores and tire centers. Also give the car a complete going over 7 to 10 days before your trip.

Sounds like a hell of of a trip. Good luck! Don’t forget to fill the gas tank. It would suck to remember all the emergency parts and forget to fill up.

I have this jack and a 1/2" breaker bar in a nylon gym bag. You can see it in use in my pic in the Amelia Island article.

Made the questionable-judgement west coast to east coast trip an a newly purchased 86.5 in 2006.
you have to realistically decide if you have enough time on your trip to do repairs beyond a quick relay/fuse/wire swap. If your on a time budget, you might have to consider a tow if necessary.
I took a rented sat phone with me. I didn’t need it, but always considered it a smart move.

Default Checklist and/or photo

Another form of a checklist is a photo of all your gear. Once you gathered everything, while it’s all laid out before packed in the car, snap a photo with your phone to keep for future reference — for the next road-trip. It’s also an easy way to inventory all the items going back in the car when packing to go home.

And the pic is solid proof that was YOUR ratchet set somebody borrowed!!

Safe travels! —In the fast lane!
