I have it from a reliable source who spoke at length about 928s with D.Bell at last year's PCA Tech Tactics that the 928-Special's motor was fragged in a super-long high-speed redline autobahn run with Bell and son in the car. Presumably due to oil misting at sustained near-redline rpms.

Hi Curt, it means you have a U.S. model 1978, #1061, which is the 1001st U.S. car built that year. Probably assembled in late spring of 1978. There were about 1130 US/Canada '78s made.

Resurrecting the old thread - Derek's motor was not fragged in a high speed run. When he eventually sold the car, it still had the original engine. The guilty party was Hans-Joachim Stuck. He blew up the engine on his car as the G28.55 was too short geared and the car would hit the limiter in 5th. The car then became a test bed for the PDK gearbox. Picture of HJS and his CS Protype with a big PDK sticker on the back in Brian Long's book. Story was told by Derek Bell to new owner of Derek's CS Proto, which is all matching numbers car.
