Just curious as I saw it mentioned in another post. I have a 81 with a 3 speed tranny. What would be involved to make it a 4 speed auto ? Is it just a bolt on replacement ?

probably is. just choose your final drive ratios with some thought if you have options.

It's not so easy swap as it seems. 4sp autobox is larger than 3sp. So much so that later bodies have larger space for it. It will not fit without some modifications between rear seats. Certainly doable but not direct bolt on job.

I did this to my old 81. You'll need a newer style TT, the cross brace should be fine, but you'll need the downshift cable or "bowden" cable from a later car.

It was a great change while it lasted. Woke the car up considerably. I wish I still had that car. I'd do it again.
