Help disprove the myth that the 928 was intended as a replacement for the 911

Never trust an automaker to have anything less than a transient plan about how their products will define them.
Plans evolve according to market dictates. Most of us here have been 928 owners for many years. It wasn't that long ago that we were still dropping 10k into 5k cars, right? Truth be told, the market has beaten up the 928 pretty badly for most of its life.
I know I'm grateful! I'm not into 911s. There are so many other sports cars I'd rather own. Yet, people are programmed to give first consideration to other brands with regard to GT cars. I'd prefer a 928 to all the rest!
I'm the eternal contrarian I suppose.

In fact if the 928 was intended by anyone involved with the 928 that it was to replace the 911, so the proposition in not a myth. It goes far above anyone however lower and up to and perhaps above Fuhrmann, if there was an "above," based on the what has been posted in this thread and in the other one about it and about Fuhrmann. The intent was clearly there whether or not it materialized.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words and this one from the Project 928 book has a lot to say on the subject of which car segment they were planning to compete against.

Bit hard to see but that's a Jaguar XJS back there behind the 928. Hard to fathom but back then the XJS and the 928 were contemporaries and followed a similar GT positioning and genesis. Back then the XJS had no wood and less chrome and was more like a 928. Back then the XJS even had a rear sway bar and shorter gearing, just like the 928.
