Default Saw a GORGEOUS Shark today...

...84.

Drove up the house, went in the garage, and couldn't believe my eyes. Within a hair of concours quality... needs a timing belt and pump for sure, but other than that... starts strong, runs well, and flawless... I mean FLAWLESS... exterior. 90% tires and disks. Reciepts and history. Seller obviously an honest guy, not hiding anything.

More than I want to spend though. I'm in agony.

I buy it, I buy it not... I buy it, I buy it not...

Thaddeus - Buy it! Spend the extra money now and you will enjoy the rewards for years to come. You will not regret it. I can tell you from experience that you can spend enormous amounts of time and money trying to restore a less-than-perfect 928 back to proper condition. JMO

Go for it! I would rather have a car I new was cared for and a little over my budget than a car that was cheap with no history.

You either pay for it now, or you pay for it later with money, time, and more... A good shark is hard to find, so take it when you get the chance.

Better listen to Nicole. If you saw her shark you would know she is right. It is a nice one and she is determined to keep it that way. It isn't the first for her so she knows the value of a well cared for shark. Right, Nicole??

How much is the car? Give us more details and a few pics and maybe we can help you figure out a fair price. When I bought my car I knew the guy was asking a little too much. He was the original owner and he had hundreds of reciepts totaling thousands of dollars. He even had the window sticker. No expense was spared by this guy. I bought the car and I don't regret it. I know exactly what I have. How much money is that worth?

He's asking a fair price IMHO. He wants 10K.

I've decided not to buy it. Here's why.

This car could be a concours quality vehicle. It needs some basic maintenance caught up, and I haven't done a PPI at a mecahnic, so some issues could be hiding out concealed, but this thing looks so solid that it would be worth a couple of K to get it to perfection.

But for me, perfection is the problem. I'd be afraid to drive it. I wouldn't want to push the car hard, or drive it to, or through, marginal neighborhoods; I'd be uptight when my kids were riding in it, I wouldn't want to bring my dog anywhere, I'd be reluctant to take it to DE or a track day. I would feel reluctant to tinker with it or mod it in any way. I'd never drive it if it looked like it might rain, or let the kids go in the garage with thier bicycles.

In short, it's not right for me. I want a car I can drive and enjoy without anxiety, something mechanically sound, but that I can drive to a superb ethnic restaurant in a marginal neighborhood and walk away from for an hour without being nervous.

Also, if I'm going to go 25% over budget, I'd want an 85 or newer. 234 horsepower isn't enough if I'm spending 10K. I'd want the extra 45 horses. Or maybe even get into an S4 that needs more help...

It's not the money. It's something else. It's just that I want a car, a car I can drive, not a possession.

Does that make sense? Or am I nuts?

These cars were made to be driven. That doesn't mean you have to rag it out. Just be careful where you park it. Pick up the kids in another vehicle. Go out for supper in another vehicle. My wife and family knows that I have limits on my car. It is not a daily driver. I only drive it when I know I can keep it out of harms way. I bought a $1700.00 truck to drive daily. You can work on the car without disrupting it's integrity. This board is full of information for the do it yourselfer. I think $10000.00 is a little steep for an 84 though. Decisions, decisions!!!!

I kinda think along the same lines as you, Thaddeus.

I absolutely LOVE to see concours quality 928s. Not sure I would love to have/drive one in reality. Minimizing the worry factor is valuable to me. I do not want to live in constant fear of rock projectiles on the freeway. I do not have to wash the car every weekend. I feel free to take the car to the track. Perhaps the most important thing is I do not have to send my kids to the torture chamber if they accidentally bump into the car with a tricycle.
It is the drive that matters most, and while not as shiny as others' 928s, it is still a pretty cool car.
Almost a decade ago, I rationalized my higher than budgeted purchase on a very low milage to my wife - this car is very well built, can be happily driven for years, and will pre-empt any possible vehicular mid-life crisis manifestations down the road.

She bought into it.

Nice thing about an older car is the stereo is not worth stealing... nuther thing that I do not have to worry about.

How many miles are on the car?

and no matter how the car looks its still almost 20 years old. I can say having just spent a ton of money on my 86.5 that when you start to fix / replace some things you end up fixing / replacing other things..

a vacuum leak under the manifold lead to all kind of work being done

if for no other reason when your in there .. thats the time to do all the other things; cam tower gaskets, seals, wires, hoses, belts, filters etc etc...

also ac, brakes, steering, tranny...switches, vac operated units..

to make along story short, 10K is alot of money considering you may have to spend a couple grand on the unexpected.

however if your going to spend the money, a car with a great body and interior is a good starting point.

LOL

$10,000 is top dollar for an 84 as far as I'm concerned. It's the kind of money you'd pay for a nice 85, 86, or 86.5 (if you're lucky). I completely understand your decision, if it's not going to be a show quality car it's too much $$$.

So why not pass the information along to us, in case one of us would like to purchase a such car? I wish I had 10k to spend on a good '84 - I think that's a great year! The two valve engines had a great sound, were not as complex, and still pretty fast. They had more torque than the eariler cars. If it's an automatic, it already had the 4-speed auto.

If I can ever afford it, I would extend my collection with either an '84 auto (preferrably with blue interior), or with a very early model with the phone dials and "Pascha" interior.
