Default Adding remote entry to MY 1991 S4

Just replaced the original Porsche UK fitted remote entry to my MY91 S4, which has the alarm controller under the right hand seat.

UK dealers added a remote system from the Hamilton & Palmer alarm company after cars were imported. It's the PA100 system also fitted to 964 and 993 I believe in the 1990s, using a single button for lock and unlock. My system worked OK most of time, then would occasionally refuse to send unlock signal which I could not get to bottom of despite changing switching relay on circuit board and reverse engineering all the connections.

The new system is a dirt cheap universal remote on eBay. I decided not to faff around with adding remote hatch unlock so as to keep the safety feature of releasing only with door open. It's a tiny box (you can see it at top left of photo showing the alarm box, with white edge connector) and interfaces very simply with the factory system. Had to strip off some cable sheath but not an issue in that location. Also had to use scotchloks to tap into factory wires which I hate, but the wiring to the alarm controller is so tight that there's no other good option (I could see whoever installed the H&P remote had just stripped off some insulation and made very poor solder joints to the wires).

For comparison you can see the original pile of three boxes. A little unfair as one of them provided cabin movement sensing and was mounted at rear of hatch. The other two boxes providing remote locking were tucked behind CE panel.

I just installed one. Super easy. I put the little box at the top left-hand Corner facing the fuse panel in the empty space. Plug the power into the bottom of one of the open relay slots. Washington to my door lock wires at the right side of the fuse box. I can't work all right off the top of my head where I spliced into the trunk latch wires but the only tricky thing was lack of i instructions. Hold any button down for a few seconds to open the hatch. I'm on if you just tap the hatch lock button it doesn't do anything. Press and hold

What I can’t work out is how to reproduce the feature where if you put your key in lock and hold in close position for over 0.5 secs the windows and sunroof close before locking car, using signal to window control module under left seat (module used MY90 on - before that switches controlled window and sunroof motors directly). I can’t do this using remote but I’ve seen it mentioned in other posts that it’s doable.

Did this on mine too, but with the remote hatch release, which is a great convenience (and you don't have to worry about keys scratching the paint around the rear hatch lock).

Nice upgrade! So did you wire a permanent ground to hatch motor?

Yes, and the hatch motor needs a permanent 12v and a trigger 12v to start the rotational cycle of the motor, then the permanent 12v allows it to finish the cycle once it gets the momentary 12v trigger signal. Problem was the remote modules send a temporary ground signal not a 12v + signal from the controller's hatch release wire l, so I wired in a relay that takes that ground signal and converts it to a 12v + signal. That's the relay shown at the end of the video.

Yeah, I didn't have that option in this car (no switch). Do you have it working or are you still going to have to use a relay to reverse the ground signal from the remote box to a positive trigger?

it worked immediately, no relay needed. my only problem was not realizing that i had to hold the button down for 3 seconds (the remote wouldn't trigger the circuit until 3 seconds elapsed, which was not what the instructions for the unit indicated....the instructions were garbage.
