Question Tips on pulling steering column?

I plan on pulling my steering column tomorrow and was wondering where the best place to split the steering shaft may be. I'd like to just separate it at the top universal joint, but it's sucked up in the column where I don't think I can get a tool on it. There's some kind of coupler in the middle and another universal joint towards the rack, but I'm concerned I won't be able to pull it up through the firewall if I separate it that low. Anybody who's done this before have any tips?

Separate it at the rack and pull it out.

Or at the rubber coupler, which will probably need to be replaced also, if the column bearings are bad.

Yup, if you can get to it.

Hmm, Getting to it shouldn't be an issue if I'm separating it from the bottom universal joint near the rack, I just don't see a part number for it.

Sorry for my ignorance, but 8A is listed as the lower universal joint, not a rubber coupler. Unless that's where you suggesting that's where I disconnect the shaft, which is the plan. I'll check it for play regardless when I remove it. Thanks.
