Default GT Comparisons: '89 to '90 to '91

Can anyone provide some specs and opinions on the differences in the GT models from year to year? Any particular year that is considered to be "better" or more in demand than other years and why? Thanks.

The 89 GT had the best wheels forged "club sport" 8 and 9 by 16 . The 90 up got air bags good or bad depending on how you look at it . The tire pressure monitoring system was ???? . The 90 > have computer controlled limited slips again good and bad ! Personally I would favor the 89 BUT since I drive a very brown 1980 that perhaps does not mean much

there was a less well known edition in 88... donk think it made it across the pond though.

I'll echo the Nicoles tips but also add my .02 euros.

89 GT (in my theory) will always have a demand factor due to its' exclusivity.

I rather prefer the non-airbag cars. Easier to upgrade to an aftermarket steering wheel.

Insurance 'may' be cheaper being one year older...

Older style under dash shelves (for those w/ long legs and short arms)
LSD (mechanical) vs. PSD (electronic) need I say any more.

The 1988 that you are talking about is the Club Sport model. It is not really a G.T. It didn't have a.c. sunroof, or even power windows. It really was stripped down, but had the same exact wheels, trans and motor as the 1989. At least one made it accross the pond, and I have heard rumors of a second. The first I had. It sold for a lot of money over two years ago to a gentleman out East for his private collection. Less than 6k miles on it.

It was a nice car.

They all look similar to the S4, but shift much slower.

Did your CS really have crank windows?

When I had my door apart for repair of the lock, I noticed there is a provision in the door for a hand crank mechanism, and I often wondered if it was ever employed.

Honestly, it did. I have never seen it before and was leary when I came acrss the car in the early 1990's but I did my homework and it was real and had crank windows. I am still trying to track down the second one in this country if it really exists and I believe it does. I have the VIN and I know the original owner. I suspect that in the next year or two I will be able to find it if it doesn't pop up on EBAY first. I could only imagine what it would bring there!!! I was told that you can possibly make a toyota regulator work in the spot of the electric. I don't know why one would do this. I would just take out the windows unless I planned on driving through rain!

It would be a waste of time and money, but the factory does often have surpluses (spelling?) of parts and may have one or two of these cranks around. I suspect they were a modified early 911 part, but I can't be sure as I never had the door panel off.

Note that there is a difference betwenn Nichols (as in Greg Nichols), And Nicole...

THe 91 model has the following improvements over '90:

- Lighther, higher pressure power steering pump for more power assist (really nice to have, if you upgrade your wheels, but it can be retrofitted)
- Power steering rack with low friction seals
- Check Engine light
- Better sound insulation
- Fender linler in passenger side rear fender
- Better shifter
- Better emergency brake handle (can't get caught in it anymore)
- Better engine compartment light
- HVAC with SMOG setting (recirculating inside air)
- No automatic cooling flaps
- Screwdriver in tool kit has red handle istead of yellow (very important!!!)

I have a very strong bond to my '91. I'll never part with it.....I hope.
That said, there's an absolutely mint '89 Black/Cashmere only a few miles from where I live. After being able to compare a first-year GT that is flawless in every respect to my '91 (which is really nice...but not as nice as this '89), if I had the opportunity, I'd have to say that I'd trade in a second.
I agree with Nicole in comparing a '91 to an '89, there are some 'luxury' upgrades that are fine; and more importantly, mechanical upgrades that make the '91 better in that respect.
But, like the last year of the GTS, I think the first year of the GT will be one of the more desirable models, if it already isn't; and it's significance in the 928 lineup will outweigh its lack of technological improvements that the '91 has....just my opinion.

89 GT is the one to own! An exclusive 928 (56? of them). Add some updated wheels, sound deadening and you have all of the comfort of the later GT and GTS with still less weight and a lot of $ left for fun. Besides, changing steering wheels to the 930 wheel is a must do modification!

I believe that 57 are known. 56 are known color and options. Info will be made about the 57th one day soon....
