Default Changing Tie Rods

I recently installed new tie rods. It's an easy job, but I don't think anyone's documented the process with pictures.

Great documentation! Since I changed out mine, the steering is incredible! Well worth the effort.

Btw, you left out the cursing while you try and get the boot on the rack end.

Thanks Dave, I need to do mine soon. My steering seems to be moving after it hits lumps in the road surface. Great write up!

I just noticed this: if you look closely at the picture I've got on top of this page, you can see my Ott x-over cat bypass and its side-mounted O2 sensor.

Dave,

How come you didn't explain to the crowd our first method of tie rod end removal? You know, when we hit the threaded part with the sledge on the 81? Oh yeah, that would pretty much sum up the WHOLE dismantling project.

You coulda had the wife unit take a swing!!!

Shawn.....sshhhh! (But you're right I did get the inner ends off with wrenches though. Had to learn on the old rack before touching mine. )

How do you know if your tie rods are bad?

What goes bad on them?

Bump for an old thread I turned up using a search.

Looks like the 928OC lost the write-up Big Dave did, linked in the original post.

You can find it on Big Dave's rennlist pages here:

WARNING dont follow those instructions about using the pipe wrench,
you need the 32mm and a 22mm wrench set, push the bumper stop inwards to the rack body then fit the 22mm to the rack rod..
Counter hold the rack while squeezing the bigger wrench towards it, wear gloves
If you use the pipe wrench you can possibly nick the shaft this will in short order cut the ends of the rack seals and the boots will fill with oil and the rack will have to be replaced

Mine does this..but I can also shift my steering rack sideways about 1/8" in the soft beaten up destroyed rack bushings.

Soooo...will replace those soonish...as soon as I find the writeup.
