Default Blaupunkt OVERDRIVE speakers

While researching possible speaker upgrades, I came across Blaupunkt's new speaker line. Their main claim to fame is that they require very little mounting depth (2" I think). I'm not a huge fan of Blaupunkt equipment, but these sound like prime candidates for upgrading the door speakers. Do any of you have an experience with these speakers?

Thanks,
Gary

Gary -

Have not had any experience with the Blaupunks, but like you I'm not
overly impressed with Blau equipment........it's not bad, just middle of the road in my opinion. You may/may not know.....but much of the MB Quart line fits just fine.......here is a pix of a final install of MB Quarts done by me with a little fabrication......looks bone stock......

Mike,
Thanks for the reply. You can't go wrong with MB Quart, and they are my first choice based on earlier posts here on RL. I was just curious if anyone here had tried the Blau Overdrive speakers. I know some of the 928 guys like the idea that Blaupunkt is German...

Question

Gary,

" I know some of the 928 guys like the idea that Blaupunkt is German... "

err... So is MB Quart though... ?

Blaupunkt may have some historical Porsche relationship as a supplier - but for speakers with blank (no logo) grilles the sound quality is more important surely? (at least the price/performance ratio) so do some listening comparisons first or find 'reliable' information on this.

I actually do like some Blaupunkt head units (black faced) as they do seem appropriate to the car - but yes middle of the road equipment, and others can look as good.

However for my money good speakers will contribute more to better sound in the less than ideal car environment. Let face it the car is not the ideal audiophile listening environment - ambient noise, glass, sweetspot etc...

But I'd go with something that someone else has already proven fits!

Mike - thanks for the pictures

Alan,
I didn't realize that MB was a German company. Personally I don't care, but I'm always curious about new technology which is why I enquired about the Blaupunkts.

Can't remember exactly what model they were. At the time they were
the middle of the road as far as Quarts go. Not the lowest level, but not
the highest level either. For the fronts you definitely want to go to the Quarts that have a better, more adjustable crossover. This will enable you to adjust the tweeters output......as they are right next to your ears. You might not want to go to the top of the line series.....the woofer may be too deep, don't know though. As long as you stay in the 2" depth area you should be fine.

The rears you can get away with cheaper crossovers, although you might want some adjustability there also.

Rear stock speakers '89 and above....

Almost exactly like mine, except I mounted the MB Quart to the factory frames from behind...

with fasteners, not hot glue like most stereo shops, so I could use the factory grills.

Actually I used both screws and silicone. Makes for a really tight install with no air leaks from back to front......important for the woofer.

Mike, I'm in the planning phase of a sound system R&R for my '91 and am considering the MB Quarts. If I may ask a few questions:

- what did you have to fabricate?

- how many watts are you pushing through them?

- from what source?

- do you think the power input level is adequate?

- did you do a two-way system all around? or a 3-way in the rear?

Thanks in advance.
