Default Dash Light Puzzler

Re: '93 GTS

After a recent replacement of my ignition switch I noticed that the lighting is uneven for the three sections that typically show total mileage, outside temp and trip mileage. The mileage and trip are dimmer. Note that the warning for call range and air bag warning show full bright across when they appear.

Thinking that the connectors were not well seated, I took the pod apart again, but the connectors seem fine. Before I put it back together, is there some other cause for this? Is is possible to swap connectors? This seems unlikely. What about the dimmer? The dimmer does work for the backlighting of the pod and HVAC controls, but does not seem to affect the mileage, etc.

Thanks.

Kevin

Kevin,
Just checked mine, All three sections are the same level.
When you turn on the side lights the dimmer does affect the three sections as well as the other lights.
Hope that gives you a default to work from.
Sounds like a connection to the dimmer.
Best,
Roger

Roger,

I checked my dimmer. With the parking lights or headlights on the dimmer have no effect on the the three areas. I even shorted the connector to get full bright. No change.

There must be something else amiss.

Thanks for your help.

If your talking about the backlighting for the digital displays in the center of the instrument cluster, I had a similar problem.... left side dimmer than the right side. But the problem only seemed to happen when reconnecting the battery, and it would go away after a few minutes.

I think this condition might be due to contact resistance at the connector for the LCD display which is mounted on the inner circuit board. I never went that deep into the cluster, as you can change both white and red bulbs by only removing the top circuit board.

Hi

Maybe a stupid question but are all the globes working, mine was dim on the left side and after I replaced the globe it was fine for about a week then the right side went dim. Next time perhaps I'll listen to others's advise to replace all globes while in there.

Sometimes a picture (even a bad one) helps to illustrate what I am referring to.

The right and left areas are darker than the picture would suggest. This is exactly how they appear while driving the car.

When you park on a steep hill, does the same condition happen when the low oil level antimated warning comes on in RED light?

The warnings, like parking brake and call range, show up full bright.

Kevin,
I have similar problem - I had posted a thread on this but got no responses a month or two ago
Post: Pod Digital Display Gremlin

Mine just seems to fade to darker - but still mostly legible - incidentally mine is dimmer in the middle - the exact opposite of yours right?

My red alerts are unaffacted...

Alan

Spoke with DR yesterday. He believes it's the dash lights.

I am ordering the lights. Then I will pull the pod for the third time. I am getting really good at it.

There is a single connector that seems to effect the reading LCD. As you hold the pod in its normal position, it's the second one from the left as you face front. While I have it out, I will press in the wires on the back of the connector and see if that changes anything before I swap out bulbs. I will post my results.

Kevin,
Did you get the new lights and see if they make any difference?

I've ordered them. I will be pulling the pod in a couple of weeks. After looking them, I am beginning to believe it is the bulbs. We'll see.

Ok, the new lights bulbs are in and YES that made the difference. I replaced the dash illumination bulbs as well.
