Default New Owner - 1988 S4 Auto

Hi all,

I am a new 928 owner

Tatty interior

Cracked dash !

Engine looks complete if a bit dusty

Recent respray looks good

Sagging exhaust is fixed now..
and looking for some help.

While working away from home in Bahrain I was bored. Having recommissioned an Audi S6 as my daily driver I needed something else to pass the time.. There are lots of nice cars that have been neglected by the locals but the downside is availability of parts and reliable mechanics..

Against all sensible advice I picked up a green1988 928 S4 that had been sitting for over a year. The previous owner had paid for a respray but lost interest in it and did not collect it.
It looked complete, the engine turned over but would not start.. Interior was a bit tatty but nothing I thought some TLC could not put right. Would have preferred a manual car but this was automatic. Having restored a 1976 911s in the past and owned and 1978 930 for many years, I felt I could handle this 928. I contacted the owner and we did a deal which surprisingly also included a grey 1987 donor car without an engine but complete interior suspension etc.

First job was to drain the fuel and flush out the tank, it was full of brown sludge. Then replaced the full pump and filter. Removed the injectors and had them refurbished. With a new battery in place the car started but was only running on 1 bank of cylinders. Replaced the ignition control modules, crank position sensor, spark plugs / coils, distributor caps and plug leads. Now it runs on 8 cylinders. Checked the thrust plate and, sure enough it was slightly deformed so released that but it does not take long before the clamp slips… Suspension and running gear are in good shape but the steering rack is leaking.

Most of the electrical systems did not work, this was mainly due to bad connections at the fuse panel or at the devices themselves, slowly over time I coaxed them back to life, indicators, horn, wipers, windows, seats, mirrors, interior lights etc.

I know I have a lot more to do but I am stuck on a few issues which perhaps someone can advise on…
- There is no Flappy solenoid valve fitted ? What symptoms will this cause ? Where can I get one, is there a modern alternative ?
- There is no wire connecting to the Throttle Position Sensor, can’t find the connector, where should it be ?
- Idle is a bit erratic, assume this is related to the vacuum system, and missing solenoid ?
- Where can I get a steering rack rebuild kit ?

Hope to get the car on the road shortly, I am probably need lots of help from the forum to get there..

Will upload some pictures.

Appreciate any advice..

Paul

If flappy solenoid missing you will be missing power in upper Rev range above the point where it’s programmed to open (from memory 4000rpm).

The TPS plug should be at end of loom under intake, on left side of throttle body. If it’s not connected I’d expect very odd behaviour at idle, or not idling at all!

Where are you located? The car looks like it was yanked from the Mississippi river! If it is just dust, that engine may have ingested lots of sand. Look at the air box and the loose and missing straps - lots of crud got around there and through the MAF and throttle body, into the cylinders. I would do a leak down before spending too much on it. Did you get a great price? If you are still in the middle east, you may have a real problem getting parts from our normal vendors. Good luck with your project.

It looks like you've been a lurker for a number of years. Welcome to the shark tank.

Hi,

The car has not been near the Mississippi as far as I know, it’s just dust, but I did find some fish bones in the front bumper, left behind by the family of cats living there!!

I am on n Bahrain and yes, 928 parts are pretty rare. I can get parts posted to me from the UK but can’t just pop down to the local parts shop at the weekend…

I have cleaned out the throttle body and the MAF, the air box straps are there, just not hooked up.

it’s going to be a labour of love but the car looks a lot better now, interior is back together and cleaned up…

Learning a lot from stripping the spare car, they are well put together..

will keep going …
