Greetings, fellow 928 enthusiasts. My 1979 928, which we have owned for 4 decades, has stock silver manhole cover wheels, which I like very much --a beautiful classic look. I am considering adding black wheels as an option to my car, but have had difficulty sourcing wheels for my configuration. My current tires are 225/50 VR16 and I understand the specs for my car are: 16x7/ 5x130 bolt pattern/ ET 65 and center bore 71.6 mm. I found wheels with the following specs but am concerned about fitment: 16x6.5 +61 ET / 5x130 / 78.1mm. The vendor will include hub rings as well. Will these fit my vehicle appropriately with no adverse effects? Also, what range would be acceptable for the ET and Center Bore specs? There are wheels available with 16x7 with 5x130 pattern, but the bore and ET vary significantly.
You cannot use a wheel with a larger center bore. You'll have all kinds of high speed vibration as the wheels move slightly off center on the wheel lugs. The center bore centers the wheel on the lip of the rotor and hub so that it spins perfectly centered. I have no experience with hub ring adapters but they would need to fit both the hub lip and wheel center bore perfectly to work correctly. If they just slide on without any force of the wheel lugs drawing the wheel onto them, that's not a perfect fit.
Otherwise the et61 offset is ok as is the 6.5" width.
I'd also advise against black wheels - that look is tired, but it's your car - make it how you want - I do with mine.
For a more aggressive look, I like the phonedials, specifically the 16"x7" et 65 wheels in the front and the 16x8 et 23.3 944 / 951 turbo wheels in the back where I had the lips polished. Had that setup on the white 81 Euro S I just sold.
I appreciate your reply regarding the specs and suggestion. We have the alloy silver 928 wheels that have the five star configuration, which look beautiful, aggressive and classic. I will keep these on the car. I also have the manholes. I concur with your assertion about the black wheels which is why I've never moved in this direction until considering this possibility recently (based on stock black wheels that I have on my Jaguar F-type) and photos of 928s with the black wheels. Thank you again. Nice photos of your 928!
Fitment ring is perfectly normal way to make wheels fit. Many aftermarket wheels need them as center hole is made for fitment which has largest hole of multiple possibilities and all setups which have smaller hub use ring to take up slack. Even plastic rings work fine as long as they are right size. Just about every aftermarket wheel manufacturer uses them. Porsche has been somewhat shielded from this due to rarer bolt pattern meaning wheels are made just for Porsches. On 5x120 etc. common sizes using rings is very common.
To quote the Isley Brothers..... Like I say to many, do what you want, it's your car. The "tired look" to some is simply their personal perception and opinion. I Have three sets of staggered manholes and tires in anodized and chrome, and one set of staggered BBS wheels in black. They look awesome, but that just my opinion and the opinion of several friends.
Just an opinion.
Yes, 7x17 ET 55 and 9x17 ET 55 will fit just fine. Vs. the stock 7x16 ET 65s, the fronts will be 10 mm further out, and the rears will be 35 mm further out (and 15 mm further in, too). Fills out the rears on a '79 nicely.
Thanks yet again you... have helped me with my then new to me very original 79 928. I recall that you were restoring an early 928 having sold a petty unique original.
If you want a really Fugly 928, put black wheels on it. YMMV.
P.S. On the other hand if you are really set on Black wheels the only way to do them is to polish the very ourter rim highly. Then you will have almost the opposite from Fugly, but rather JFB.
