Good question.
My early, October 1986 produced, 1987 S4 has the wing nut.
My March 1988 produced 1988 CS has the bolt, like my September 1988 produced 1989 CS. None of them has this now famous bracket (The S4 had it, originally).
When was your 1988 S4 produced?

I prefer the wing nut, because it allow me to disconnect the battery easily without tool when I don't intend to use the car for some time.

I prefer the bolt and a good quality battery switch - because the bolt allows for a better (tighter) ground connection, and this is one of the most critical high current connections for starting.

With a wing bolt you also have to be careful when it is disconnected - because its so easy for it to become reconnected again given its movement range.

Thank you, Alan and 928CS, for your replies. Sorry, but my car is hibernating for the winter months, presently, so I can not check the build date. I love the simplicity of the wing nut(yes, you have to be careful when disconnecting it, and isolate it properly) but I prefer the more solid connection of the bolt. Ideally with a good cut-off switch. Time to source some more parts.
Cheers. Don

Which battery switch do you use? I'd like to do this on my car. I had previously used a POS one that I eventually discarded. Thanks!

Wingnut. Take a towel and put it in between when you have to disconnect, So easy and no tools, and easy to add a ground for your powered compact sub. Use a good thick washer to make sure pressure is applied evenly across the cable flat end touching the mounting point. Make sure the washer is burnished clean and treat it with Deoxit to help. Good thick washer that won't bend and I have no trouble putting ample torque on the wing nut. I looked at switches but I am not having any issues with the wingnut that drive me to make a change. I can disconnect the battery literally in less than 30 seconds.

I got plenty of other issues to worry about...like an interior....
