My transmission replacement, 6 months overdue is finally ready to go back in. But what is this device ? It attaches to the hollow space in the back of the diff. Temp sensor maybe? How does it attach? Temp conducting adhesive? I’m showing the back if it. Is my unit missing something?

Pick-up for speedometer.
Push it into the hole and use that little clip under the bolt to hold it in.
