Greetings! New to the forum and new to Porsches! I have recently purchased a 1984 928s and I'm in the process of doing a lot of work to it. I've always loved these cars having seen one when I was around 5 years old and commenting to my best friend "that's a really cool car". I have a lot of issues on this car as I'm pulling it back from the brink.
It almost went to the dogs as it had been sitting for a few years after the owner passed away and although it was looked after for most of its life, it had a rough time over the past 10 years or so being passed around by family members and left in the elements etc. All in all I'd give it a solid 6.5/10 as far as current condition and other than a horribly worn clutch and the AC not working it drives surprisingly well and everything else works, I've stopped rust that was creeping up in a few places and the car is now being looked after as it should, one thing though is that I need phone dial wheels. When I saw the car as a young boy it had phone dials and I need this car to have the same. I've searched high and low and finding 16" phone dials is tough, I ended up finding a single 16x8 911 phone dial wheel on ebay (part no: 95136211700 ) and another single 16x8 911 wheel with the same part number on stockwheels.com I did a little cursory investigation and looks like they'll fit my 1984 (at least I hope they do or I'll be building a very expensive coffee table). The thing is, from what I've read on this forum, the 928 16" phone dials should be 16x7 and I'm guessing that even if these 16x8's fit the rear, I'll need to source 16x7's for the front, so here's my question: "Can I fit 16x8's on the front, would that be advisable since I can buy another two of them or should I keep looking for some 16x7s ? It's a 5 speed.
Any advice would be seriously appreciated!
Thank you!
The key factor is the offset of the wheels. Stock wheels are ET60 & ET65 up front. Those 911 wheels are most likely et45 or lower, which will not work on the front and could be tight in the rear.
EDIT -
That's what I get for reading too fast, skipped over the part number - 95136211700 - that's an offset of et23.3 which will work (be very tight) on the back end. No way it will fit on the front unless you like that look of wheels sticking out inches past the fender.
Thanks, I had not considered that at all! Hopefully these will fit and I haven't wasted good money. I'll be on the look out for 928 16x7's for the front but man are they hard to find! I know new ones can be bought but they're around 600 dollars a pop. I appreciate the reply!
Nice car. I know what it's like to have a romantic notion of the wheels you want. I feel the same way about phone dials on a 944 turbo. Having said that, I like the wheels on and I'd like them even better reconditioned. Great color by the way.

How many 16x7 et65 phone dials are you looking for? I have a pair that are in good shape that I'd sell. PM me.
Thanks mate! Much appreciated! I'm really glad I asked for advice here, really made my day! I'm in CA but I've just been looking online in the usual places

That looks AMAZING! and exactly what I was going for! This is exciting! The stock aluminium slot wheels just look too drab to me, especially these colour coded ones..
An update on the wheels, I got a set of front wheels from Petza914 (thanks for reaching out), they're a bit rough but I decided to try and fix them up myself:
This was the worse of the two, some curb rash and damage to each of the phone dial holes as well as some pin holes and scratches to the main surface (no surprise, I saw the photos before buying them).
I'm going to do my best with what I have here, luckily the second one is in pretty good shape and didn't have any curb rash or noticeable damage to the phone dial holes, just some pin holes and scratches which I can take care of later
I got to work with some 320 grit sandpaper and some elbow grease
This was taken after I was about half way through sanding
There's very little I can do about these gouges, I know I could use bondo but I think I'll just tidy them up as much as I can for now and see what they look like painted
No more curb rash! (there were actually 3 places with curb rash on this rim), when I tried to clean off the dust with brake clean, the paint just melted off as I guess these were rattle-can painted in the past, I was going to strip the paint off anyway so I applied some paint stripper and got them down to bare metal:
After a lot more sanding and cleaning, I applied a few coats of high build primer, and this is as far as I've gotten so far, the nicks and gouges that I couldn't get out are very noticeable but I think that once I've sprayed on the paint and clear, they'll be less noticeable. More updates as I progress!
I've finished prepping and painting the first wheel, I'll 2k clear coat both of them once I'm done with both, here's how the first wheel turned out:
I sanded down the high build primer with 600 grit sandpaper and got it as good as I could, but some parts are just too damaged and my elbow grease needs replacing so I'm just going to settle for "just okay". I did a bit more sanding and cleaning before laying down a few coats of wheel paint and these are the results:
This was when it was still wet, the second wheel was deceptive as it looked in much better state but actually had a whole whack of pinholes and damage to the face of the wheel, a whole lot of 320grit elbow grease later and it's a bit better, I'll be adding primer when I get the chance and finishing it up before clear coating both here's they are side by side, the painted one has now fully cured and this is the sanded down and yet to be cleaned off second one:
I'll post updates as I go!
