Default Removing steering tube

Today I have spent hours trying to remove this bolt

I am in the process of removing the steering tube (see picture below). This bolt seems to be the last hurdle. I can get a wrench on it but do not have enough space to move it around and apply power on it. Unlike the drawing in the picture above, the bolt and joint are inside the black round hollow end of the tube and not outside - leaving you almost no space to work with. Is this always the case or did I forget something in the removal process?

thanks for helping! All tips and tricks are more than welcome.

Not sure if I understand. Do you mean the bolt at the end marked by the red line or the end marked by the blue line.

OK sorry I didnt understand your question .
to get to the top rag joint,
put the steering wheel nut onto the top of the shaft, put some vice grips on it .
then pull the shaft to the rear of the car .
NOTE reattach the column to the dash.
NOTE this is usually easier with two people,
one holding the vice grips and one pushing off the C clip

while holding the shaft back push the C clip off the shaft so it will release the upper preload collar,
this will let the shaft drop down to remove the rag joint bolt

Thanks! That is an interesting approach. Unconventional at least. I will try tomorrow. Unfortunately no one there to assist but I'll try it anyway

Check double check. You are referring to the circlip in the picture below
