Default Green wire question

All - 1983 s

Replacing green wire - probably factory original. Sometime in the past, the connector near passenger cam tower was cut off of both sides. New green wire obviously has its connectors in place, and I have a new mating connector for the other side that leads into the main harness and to the ignition box.

Question - on the new green wire, how do I know which terminal the shield and center lead are connected to? I would imagine wiring it backwards would cause problems of all sorts. The new connector does have a small dot on one side and not on the other, which I am sure means something but not sure what.

Note small raised dot on this side of connector.

No dot on this side.

Little more info...

Looking at the current flow diagram, there is an 'A' and 'B' mark on the distributor. The shield is the 'B' terminal and connects to terminal 31d on the ignition box. The 'A' terminal is the central wire and connects to pin 7 on the ignition box.

On the distributor end of the green wire, you can see that one terminal has a green jacket and one has a white - does that mean that the shield is on the green side?

If you plug into the distributor a continuity meter should show which is shielding (ground).

Thanks Billu -

I almost asked that…if the shield was actually connected to the distributor case and thus part of the cars ground system. I could not tell from the current flow diagram.

There is a key in the male that should allow the female to be inserted only one way.

All you really need to know is what wire goes where, in the female connector on the car, right?

I can pull back the boot on a good connecter (on a loom) and take a picture, on Monday.
(I need to cut the connector off, anyway.)

Thanks all.

just some notes to conclude the thread for others in the future.

I got no continuity from either of the pins to ground with the new wire plugged in to the distributor and secured. It must not ground to the cars ground system.

so…I guessed (not the best move as I was concerned about shorting a transistor in the ignition box). I connected the wires with central lead to the marked side of the new connector (see above) and no start. Switched them, and everything worked. So in my case the circled mark on the new green wire is the shield part of the cable.

greg please go ahead and post the picture(s) as I did not take one and it will definitely add to the thread.

Do you know what brand the green wire is? URO or Bosch?

Stan - it was a URO (sourced from Roger).

You definitely have to have the connector on the passenger side wired correctly. When mine was replaced and wired backwards my car would start but the distributor need to be one tooth off to time it, rotated all the way clockwise, and I couldn't connect the advance line. I traced it as you did using the WSM and once it was correct the car started up great and I was able to time the car properly. Spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out the issue but was really glad when it was discovered. I also started with a URO green wire and thought that may have been the issue. Sent it back got a Bosch wire and then found out the real issue.

did the white plug slide into the distributor easily or did you have to force it to seat it?

NOTE the latest URO green wires were made with the distributor side white connector too far away from the green sheathing,
thus once the spacer is removed from this wire the two wires will be forced to crush into the white connector at the distributor.

This may either short out the new green wire or damage the pickup coil due to forcing this connector into the distributor.

NOTE I suggest to only use the Bosch green wire yes it costs more but it fits perfectly.

NOTE I have found 3 of these new green wires, all 3 caused the engine to not run.

The first one I found was sent to me from World Pac,
I spent a few hours testing all the other components of the car till I put the old wire back in.
and the engine fired right up.
I ordered a Bosch from Roger.

NOTE on another occasion a URO was installed by an owner and had worked for a few weeks,
then the engine died while the car was away from home resulting in a tow.

Thanks Stan for the info. I will say it runs great right now but your last comment scares me a bit...I will pull the distributor again and check the status of the pins inside. The plug did not require any force to go in.

Well OK then maybe they fixed the problem.
my info is from 8 months ago.

On the 3 URO green wires I saw,
they all had to be forced into the side of the distributor ,
so the metal slide anchor plate would properly fit.

there is also a spacer thats supposed to be cut off before you install the connector,
if you post a picture of the wire inserted into the distributor it will answer many questions

The issues with the URO Green wires were fixed a long time ago and only affected a few from their first batch.
Not had any issues since then. We sell at least 30 URO wires to every1 Bosch.
