Default No start issue

Hi all

I was merrily driving in Palo Alto when my ‘83 928 stopped delivering gas to the engine. Pedal to the metal gave me nothing.

I tried to jumping the car, replacing the battery, double checking the ground for the battery - nothing helped.

i think it might be the fuel pump? I can’t hear it turn on when I try to start the car, even when I jump the fuel pump relay the pump remains off.

I’m going to try to hook the fuel pump up directly to the battery tomorrow and see if that can help me isolate the problem.

one issue that might come to mind is that earlier today I replaced my faulty fuel sender with one which I picked off an ‘88 944. I blocked off the second port and installed it. I don’t think that should have any repercussions though?

thank you all for your time and wisdom.

did you check the fuel pump fuse?
do this before trying to hot wire the pump.

NOTE on hot wiring the pump dont use a loose wire to touch either of the pumps terminals,
ideally you would have a switch and fuse inline with the testing system. and have terminals or alligator clips to attach to the terminals

NOTE errant sparks flying at the fuel pump with the possibility of fuel vapors could result in an explosion or fire.

NOTE a pump that is not running due to being jammed will make big sparks if touched with 12 v,

This is how one owner caught his 84 Euro on fire,
big sparks at the pump ignited fuel vapors .

The fire extinguishing event was even more catastrophic ,
BUT the garage and the car did survive .
Hint a neighbor with a 50 LB dry chemical extinguisher came over and put the fire that was on the garage door opening and the car out,
This covered the floor of the two car garage in snow,
as well as the car that had a rear PU cover engulfed in flames as the hatch was open so the whole inside of the car was also covered in snow.

Wow. What a story. Thanks for the tips, the fuel pump fuse was a problem for me last time because the diagram I have been using (attached) said fuse 22 was empty. I was searching through rennslist when I found a quote from dr Bob, who mentioned that the WSM said fuse 22 was fuel pump, so I threw a 16 in there and violia! It worked. I assumed that fuse 22 was fuel pump then?

Even if not, both fuse 13 and 23 are currently in good shape.

Just tried hot wiring the fuel pump and no luck. My multimeter will show a connection between it and the battery but I can’t get it to spin when I connect it to the battery. Possibly jammed? My friend has a spare so I might try replacing it in any case..

thank you.
I drained the tank and found that someone had taken off the strainer from the plug. The tank is looking pretty grimy. Would you happen to have a suggestion for a way to clean it without removing the fuel tank? Maybe evapo rust?

Where strainer was looks the worst.

Plug with no strainer.

call Roger,
order the old version of the tank transfer hose,
its thicker and better than new version.
a new strainer,
a pump,
a short metal line,
a fuel filter, .
6 sealing washers,
Fuel outlet short hose ,(strainer to pump)
and some hose to replace the return hose to the fuel sender.
a fuel tank to body grommet seal. and a few extra fuel injection hose clamps.
drop the tank and try using some simple green and hot water if no good,
then take it to the radiator shop let them clean it
