RMB and x-pipe?

RMB and x-pipe?
Anyone have an RMB and an Ott x-pipe (with stock resonators) on a street car? I have the RMB now, and it's what I would describe as "keep it under 2k revs until you're out of the neighborhood" loud. If I add the x-pipe, how loud will it be?
Will it be "don't fire it up while the children are sleeping" loud?
"Frighten the livestock at idle" loud?
"Watch out for mobs of villagers with pitchforks and torches" loud?
Thanks.

It would be stock car loud, Nascar loud. Especailly with your 89 GT which has smaller resonators. An 87 has bigger ones and would still be rather Nascarish. Your best bet would be to hook up with someone who has the Ott x pipe with stock mufflers and then determine if you want o go louder than that. If I was to put one on Helmut I would put the stock rear muffler back on.

MB- I have a Borla/ X pipe setup on my '85 S2, which is a different setup than yours...but when I pulled the fouled cats and installed the X...the noise level increased tremendously!

First off, the sound of an x-pipe with resonators and RMB will sound horrible, very raspy, as well as being loud at WOT. Also, at high RPM the car will sound like a crotch-rocket, emitting a high-pitched wail.
I did not like the sound at all, so I replaced the RMB with the factory muffler, and just like that, all was well once again. The horrible rasp was gone, and in it's place was a very nice subdued, rich exotic car sound which is very pleasing to the ear.
I went out on the web to see what other guys were running with their x-pipes. I found a Mustang site where they post product reviews, and none were happy when they used an 'x' with a FlowMaster (..too raspy), and all x-pipe users were very happy when they used MagnaFlows or DynoMax's.
And then I found out that Bassani (..manufacturer of exhaust systems including x-pipes) recommends that when using an x-pipe, use an 'absorption' muffler like MagnaFlow and DynoMax as opposed to 'baffled' or 'chambered' mufflers like a FlowMaster.
So I ended up buying DynoMax's and I'm very pleased with their sound. I recommend buying the stainless MagnaFlows; I would have too, but only DynoMax had the 3" cores in the configuration I was looking for at the time.

Well my 87 sounds OK to me, at 4K it certainly comes alive and best to keep it below that in built up areas. With GT resonators IMO it becomes waaay to loud, really is down to personal preferance though ...

My brother down in Corpus has the X pipe and RMB on his 87. He likes it but it is way too loud for me and drones at certain RPMs (highway speeds.) It sounds very exotic and good at full honk but the excessive drone and way too much noise would not work for my neighborhood. I can hear the Chevelle that lives three blocks away when he comes home and I don't want to be like that guy (I live in a quiet neighborhood.)
I am considering an X pipe but I would like to add some high flow cats to it for noise (and drone) control and semi-legality. Has anyone done this?

I am with Chris, my '87 sounds wonderful. But I do admit, they are both 5-speeds and I did not like this setup on my auto because it was as Lag says, raspy. With the later smaller resonators as Shane says, it would likely be "too loud" ... if you can quantify that. I remember back in the good old days when Pat Edwards still owned a 928 ... first time I ever met Pat I heard his '85 over an entiretrack full of race cars, a good quarter mile away ..... I drove Tom M's '87 auto with that setup (later small resonators) and X and RMB ... that car was so loud and raspy that people almost overturned their cars trying to scurry out of the way when I hit the gas

Those of you with x-pipe's, who are you finding to do the exhaust work with no CAT? We had a few places that had no problems doing the work. Lately they did a 180, will not work on any car without a CAT unless they put one on. There is no emissions testing up here.

For what exhaust work do you need the assistance of a mechanic?
