Default XZN or In Hex (Allen Head) Bolts on Cam Caps?

My early 87 S4 (Built Oct 86) has normal in hex bolts on the cam caps. I've read many posts here that the bolts require an XZN (or triple square) tool to remove them. I have also read that someone else with an 87 S4 had in hex bolts.
Was there a change in the type of bolts used by Porsche at some stage?

Cheers,
Gary.

87 on had socket capped bolts 928.104.111.01 short and 928.104.114.01 long
86 32v had hex head bolts 928.104.481.17 & 18

quite different sealing arrangement between them.

In Seth K Pyle's thread titled Replacing tensioner pads, replace chains as well? It shows that he has in hex bolts on his cam caps, and in post 5 of that thread there is a copy and paste from the workshop manual showing in hex bolts.
Seth's car is an S3 (86.5?), so maybe there was a period in 1986 when they ran out of XZN bolts?

The cam chain gold coloured links didn't line up with the nubs on the cams on my car, is this normal from the factory?

Cheers,
Gary.

ah! I got confused and thought you were talking about cam cover bolts. not the camshaft bearing caps. Sorry.
WM shows 13, M6 x 30mm socket capped bolts. I don't see any photos showing hex bolts, or any mention of them.

I think he is referring to the same style bolt you are. he is calling it, "in hex', which i interpret to mean inside hexagonal, or socket head, Allen head bolts.

Interesting subject - 87 to 95 PET calls up two different bolts ----
Allen Head Cam Cap Screws with captive washer M8 x 35 87 to 95 999 218 023 02 - New from Porsche these are Allan head full thread with a captive washer. PET states they are M8 x 35 when in fact they are M8 x 40 - 52 needed per engine.
52 of the above needed - 26 per head - 32 for cam caps & 20 for the end pieces all 40mm
12 Point w/washer Cam Cap Bolts - M8 x 40 999 510 029 02 - These are 12 Point new from Porsche and partial thread with a captive washer. PET states 18 are needed.

I just had a look at the Porsche Engine Training Video and noticed that there were Allen Head Cam Cap Screws used rather than 12 Point Screws.
I'm surprised that there is rarely a mention of the Allen head screws here.
Glad I didn't get a Hazet XZN tool, they seem to be difficult to obtain in Australia.

Cheers,
Gary.

A picture tells a thousand words......................as long as it hasn't been photoshopped!

If anyone else is looking for the Hazet XZN tool in Australia, www.europeantools.com.au have them in stock. The usual AusTax applies
