Default Best brake upgrade for Phone dial wheels

I want to maintain the original 16" phone dials on my 79 while upgrading rotors and calipers. Has anyone found a workable solution?
I searched the archives and found where some have installed the S spindles to use the factory S brakes but there was no mention if this changes any suspension geometry.

I upgraded my 81 to S spindles & brakes, no change to geometry, same upper / lower control arms. If you haven't yet, now would be a good time to upgrade the lower ball joint to the later steel version as well.

I have S4 brakes on my 79 with phone dials and I've also run phone dials on my S4, so that's another options. To do this upgrade you either need a caliper adapter bracket like this:

or upgrade controls arms, spindles and hubs.

No spacers behind the wheels to clear anything?

Depends on what S4 calipers are used at front. There is more than one different version of S4 calipers. In one local case they scraped ever so slightly in US '86.5.

S4 calipers need the 16 inch version of the phone dials to fit.

But the older S brakes will be perfect on a street driven 928.

But if you want the best factory Porsche brakes that can fit under the 16 inch wheels, 993 C2 calipers fit and the rears have larger pistons in the same size as the 928 S4 version.

My brakes on my 81 Euro S were awful when I bought the car. Figured I'd be doing the same type of upgrade I did on my Spyder, but replaced the lines with braided stainless, the master cylinder and the brake booster and can now lock up all 4 wheels with the stock S brakes with sticky summer 225 and 245 tires on the car. The need some cosmetic love but seem fine for this street driven car.

I too have the 16" dials - 928 versions up front and 944 Turbo versions at the rear - no spacers.

Petza,
What is the width on your 944 Turbo wheels, are they a Turbo S or something special?
I have a set of 944 turbo wheels but they don't look as wide as your wheels mine are 951.362.116.01 8J x 16 x ET52.3.

Vilhuer,
I thought all S4 caliper bodies were the same, do you know how to differentiate them?
I see there were S4 calipers that were for 304mm rotors and some for 322mm rotors would this be an indicator?

Brian.

I thought only the GTS calipers used the 322mm rotors. Rears on the GTS and S4 were the same. 322mm rotors are what I used with the GTS big blacks I installed

Casting differences with the wheels can play a factor too. I've test fitted different PD's on my 87 and some have a tiny bit more clearance than others. All of them are very close.

Did you have to roll the inner fenders for clearance?

Yes. Rolled the inner lips and flared the fenders out a bit. Others have installed these same wheels without having to do that so depends on each car and how it was put together.
