TBH I’m looking at your photos on a small iphone, but the strut towers do not appear to be red (to my eyes). The black painted trunk / battery box is another issue. What color are the strut towers? You seem to be genuinely wanting to discover the true factory color; remove a door panel, it should be the original body color back there unless someone really did an amazing color change on the car.

I’m old school so red is perfectly fine with me. But I think it would be really fun if it turned out to be metallic green as someone posted earlier!

Clean up one of the shock towers with some cleaning solution on a rag, and take a close-up picture and post. Someone here may be able to identify the color. Chances are that is the original color. Another clue that the car has been repainted is that your hood hinges are red. I believe they would be cad plated (not painted) from the factory.

My 79 is silver, has the sticker on the door jam denoting silver as original color, and my shock towers are the same color as the op's pic, kind of a faded green.

Did the ‘79 cars come from the factory with a color designation plaque? I thought that I remember reading somewhere that early cars didn’t have one, but I really don’t know when they started adding them.

Can anyone confirm? I was told there was no color designation plaque/sticker etc on the 78 or 79 cars. Certainly I haven't been able to find one in mine.

I had a color sticker on my 78, right on the door jamb. It was the code for minerva blue, and the color too. It was original as well.

I believe the sticker is MIA. I will do a double/triple check next time I am at the garage. Any chance you could send a pic of where exactly the sticker should be?

MORE PAINT clues-
Well with the guidance of a fellow Rennlister (vastly more 928 experience) we are going through the car and tackling the issues. We began yesterday with removing the drivers mirror as it had been incorrectly mounted by a previous owner or painter.... Taking the mirror off we were able to check the inside of the mirror as well as the door areas normally covered up. No sign of anything other than guards red. Wayne adds more cred to the idea that this car may have been VIN'd as Helblau but sold new as Guards Red.
