Default automatic transmission noise

This is a 1981 with the 3 speed MB automatic transmission. When the car is first started, if I maintain steady throttle pressure until the car reaches the necessary RPM for an upshift, all is good. However, if I back off the throttle at a lower RPM and thereby encourage an early upshift, the transmission makes a rather noticeable spinning or whining sound as it engages 2nd gear. When the car has been run for a few minutes, this behavior disappears. It may just be that the transmission fluid needs to warm up and circulate properly. The fluid level is fine and it is still clear from a recent change.

Perhaps I am worrying needlessly but the PO acknowledged that he had to replace the transmission with a used one about 3000 miles ago and everything else he did to this car has not been of high quality.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Regards,
John

Spinning/whining noises are not normal, under any circumstances.
That being said, good luck trying to isolate the problem.
Noises transfer around, under these cars, like the entire rear of the car is a giant speaker.
I've spent days/weeks trying to isolate noises.

Thanks Greg.
Unless other drive train issues develop, I'll just live with these sounds. Perhaps I'll remove the rear seats and install a giant subwoofer back there to drown them out

John

That's probably a good plan...drive it unti it is obvious.
The 3 speed automatics, with their original internal Mercedes pieces, are incredibly durable units....might take awhile.
