Driving Light Conversion
I remember a thread a while back, about someone wanting to convert their fog/driving lights to something more useful. Or, as an alternative to their pop-up headlights. So they could just fill the stock lights in or something. Anyhow, I found the pictures and figured I would post them. I believe these were taken at Devek days in 2001. I think I saved these off the SoCal928 board, so credit goes there. I do not know who's car it is, or who's pictures. But the car has some interesting modifications. So it ought to ilicit some discussion. It has the inlets to the intake tubes cut out of the hood as well... I think the "driving" lights are GM products, maybe off a Suburban or something. I can't remember offhand. But they do fit into the stock location quite nicely...
I think there are ways of extracting any water from the intake tubes.
Strosek did the same thing, and did not have problems.
I'm guessing a piece of foam, or a hole in the intake tubes to drain them, would do the trick.
Anyhow, word on the board is that there is no huge benefit.
And in my opinion, it ruins the lines of the hood.
But the lights are cool.
I could see the coolest idea would be to run them as your main lights,
and leave the popups down. Or remove the popups and fill them in
completely. Regardless, I am guessing that it is a big improvement
when added to the stock lights.

One could also add 951 lower lights if one wanted to "keep it in the family" as it were.
No, I haven't actually fitted them completely, but I did a mock set and measure with a pair that was lying around the shop years ago. IIRC, they slotted in nicely.
But I would bet the lights from the 'burban are cheaper.

I remember talking to that guy (name escapes me)..he is a friend of Phil Tongs. Those are Chevy Suburban lights..but he mentioned that they were only parking lights..hence..no real wattage...or use at nighttime. They were also smaller than the space..so not a perfect fit..but look good overall.
Knowing all this...wonder if there is some other domestic car with decent fogs..that will fit in that space properly?...hmm...

Definitely nice lights. I like the simpler look.
Hmmm. I just realized one of mine is cracked. I'm game to find lights that work. Or I'd buy them if someone finds them.
Oops. I'm guessing there's more to this. Like bulb holders????

Has anybody converted to stock Euro pencil-beam driving lights? No doubt the parts would be expensive new, but perhaps someone on the other side of the pond could source used ones?

I'm not all that impressed with my euro's lights...
It's all pretty old technology, old lenses, and old reflectors.
Retrofitting something newer seems to be the best idea.
Maybe not the suburban lights, but something along those lines...
Perhaps a PES high beam, behind a clear lens, in the stock location?
One driving, one fog...

The Hella 90MM high beams I used for my head light swap fit in the bumper perfectly. The matching fog lights (which I did not get) are even shorter.
The plastic trim slips right over the round lens.

Cool carbon fibre Chevy headlights
Obviously some fab work would need to me done to the back of the housing assy.
I might try to find a stock lamp assy at a local junkyard, and see what would need to be modified.

Well look at that!
Interesting....
If it is the same size as that suburban light, it should fit in the 928 space quite well.
I would think only minor fabrication would be required. The main thing is the fit!
