Default Back with S3 5-Speed from 85?

Hi colleagues, need your assistance and help. After a big mistake (selling my Euro 1984 928S 5 Speed last year) I want to buy another 928. This 1985 S3 is currently located in the Netherlands, but came from the US. Unfortunately travelling is still limited in Europe due to Covid, but I want to prepare my visit and the nice seller is happy to send me every info I need. Just to translate the main parts of the classified: new clutch, new timing belt, new tires, new brakes, new battery, low mileage, no cracks in dashboard, original condition including Radio Blaupunkt:

https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-...18136-216-1125

Does this 1985 US S3 (with F in the VIN) have already the big S4 brakes? Are the loudspeakers in the back original or aftermarket? What else can you tell me or do I need to know or check with these early US S3 models regarding specific problems? How many were build with manual gearbox?

Many thanks in advance,
bernd from Cologne

No 85s had the S4 brakes. I don't think you will regret selling your 84 Euro after driving the 85 for awhile. Its a better engine in some ways. Makes far more torque and can be up upgraded to make same HP as a euro 2 valve.

During the 1985 MY, 1,018 were produced for the US and Canadian markets, with a manual transmission.

This is seems to be a very nice example (except that i don't like the dashboard cover on the pictures), but i would certainly prefer this car:

This is a 1986 MY, so it has the bigger and better brakes, has no sunroof and it is already registered in your country.
And only 109 were made with a manual transmission for the RoW market!

Can't answer the speaker issue without pictures to know what you are referring to. Like all 928s I ever saw, there are speakers on the rear quarter panels, on the underside, with perforations on the panel and no separate grill. Also, except for the early cars, there are speakers on the sides of each rear seat, with a grill. This car looks very nice. Someone had the passenger door skin off and did not put it back on properly - you can see it in the pictures along the top edge.

Thanks, Ed. In fact, the picture of the rear loudspeakers are not in the ad. They are on both sides of the rear seats. I will try to post a picture here.

According to the original bill in the classified, the red 928 S3 should originally be an "4 Speed Automatik"?? Can someone confirm this?

Thanks!

The window sticker shows that it was built as a 5-speed manual. I think that by 1985 Porsche listed the 4-speed automatic as standard equipment, with the 5-speed manual as a no cost option.

Thanks, a little bit confusing is that on the left side ("standard equipment") the automatic transmission is mentioned additionally.

Since the S3 are offered more often in the US, one more question: is the engine - compared to S2 - more complicated and laborious to screw and are the spare parts difficult to find?

Thx,
bernd

Both cars have the same power, but the S2 is more fun to drive because the engine likes to rev. The 5 l has torque like a tractor at low rpm and feels a little bit weak.
With Porken´s chips the S3 has way more power!
The 2 valve engine is less complicated.

Thx, Karsten. According to the seller, this car should be equipped with a PorkenChip in combination with modified (higher) fuel pressure - if I understood him correctly. But no X-Pipe etc.

I have seen that you had trouble finding an used engine. I`m a little bit afraid to find spareparts for the US-S3 engine here in germany if possibly necessary in the future..

Quick update: today I bought an 928S from `82, 5 Speed, without sunroof, meteorgrey, car in Germany since first registration. Red stripes on the car and the wheels are fortunately not painted (only stickers). Needs some work and will go back to original look. Sorry for the bad picture - will keep you updated.

Update: zivilisation process nearly at the end:

1. Operation "rescue" started in obviously difficult circumstances:

2. Original S-look plus maintenance (new timing belt etc.):
