Default Anyone own a 968

I have owned several 928, never a 944 or 968. Interested on your opinions of owning and driving a 968. Cab vs coupe too

I nearly bought an M030 968 just before I bought my 928. It was light and that big 4-cylinder is a sweet engine. I’d love to own one.

I have a manuql 94 968 couoe The previous owner set it up with Konis, strut tower brace, RS Barn chio and exhaust, and Carrera III 18 inch wheels with RE11 rubber- so not quite stock The ride is stiff but fhe car just STICKS to the pavement. It has LSD and is a very resoonsive handler. I'm guessing it has around 250 HP and it's quick, but my 84 928 still generates more of a shove to the back when accelerating

Not a 968 but i have a chipped 951. Very driveable and pretty quick. I love the flared arch look and much preder the 944 rear over the 969 but it doesnt have the presence or sense of occasion of either my early or late design 928s in my opinion

I have a 968 that doesn't drive, but a 944 S2 that does and it's great. Very different driving experience than my (not quite right) 928. I don't have a great baseline for you among my cars, which is a crazy thing to say, but I drove an '83 928 and really felt like that experience was comparable to driving my 944, just with a V8. The 944 just feels super compliant on curves, in a way that my 928 doesn't, quite. I think that's what people talk about when they refer to the 928 as more of a GT. You've got to work the engine to get the 944 to move, but it will chirp the tires in 2nd gear (not sure how this compares to the 6MT of the 968, but the engines are dang near the same) and, so long as the torque tube is in order and the balance belts are timed appropriately, it's a treat of a car.

Cheers

I have owned a 1987 951 and a 1991 944 S2.
Right now my 1992 928 GTS is what I drive. IMHO they are all transaxles but after that it is difficult to compare them. I always thought, that'll have my 944 S2 and GTS. But I had to realize, that maintaining three Porsches on my own and use them as turnkey cars was too much work. The car with the "lowest" value" had to go. After the 944 S2 was gone, I never looked back. The 944 and 968 are very good cars but the 928 is a completely different animal.

Be more specific in what you want to know and you'll get the answers here in this forum I'm sure.

  • I’ve owned several porsches including several 928. Now I want to have a Porsche again. I’m mixed about 928, having put so much money and always feeling that the car was a great high spoed tourer but heavy. Looking at the market 968 has begun to look interesting. It’s not the horsepower I need, but agility is what I want.Interestingly more cabs are available and many have low miles. Maybe people didn’t enjoy them after initial purchase. I’m not that excited about the style of car. I also think the opportunity to get a 968 is slipping away. Coupes are hard to find.
  • so, if you have one do you like it or not and why
  • I know some will suggest a 951 but 968 seems a few steps ahead and newer

I have a 944S2 cab, which is not a 968, but the closest thing. Yes, a much more agile feeling car. Quick, but not as fast or as comfortable. To me, less of a special feeling car. Interestingly folks where I live appreciate the 944 much more than my 928s. I think they mistake it for a Ferrari. 968 would be less that way as it has a more distinctive look.

If this is the case, would you like to open your garage and ask yourself this question every time you are going for a drive? This would be a "no go" for me.

The 968 is a step further refined. But it is not so different from a 944 S2. Two things that I remember are stuck with me from the test drive. The engine runs smoothly but you can feel the vibration through the pedals.
The six speed shifts just fine but IMHO it has too many gears. I know people like to shift but back then I preferred the 5 speed in my S2. Especially in city traffic, you're changing gears all the time, no need with the torque available.

I own an '87 951 (this year marks the 5th year of ownership), it is modified to what I consider Stage 2.5 (AFM to MAF conversion, 15psi, 3.5" exhaust etc) and it runs great, I figure it is around 280hp. The chassis is well balanced and the car feels very athletic. The styling of the 968 is neat but never really bowled me over compared to the 944 Turbo. The Turbo cars take well to sensible modifications (without affecting reliability) which increases the fun factor. With the 968 you are limited to how much you can wring out of the engines, unless you want to spend some serious $$ and turbocharge or supercharge it. Both cars are well built and a true testament to Porsche's build quality especially 30+ years later AND they have aged very well.
Here's my '87.

If you're looking at 968's...there really is only one to get. The 968 Clubsport. I've owned about 6 944's. One 944 cab. Wouldn't have a cab again if I was looking at handling. Mine looked great, but the handling difference between coupe and cab is noticeable.

There is a '95 cab auto near to me that's been for sale for a while. I kind of like it but I am afraid it would be a slug, even compared to my '80 928.

I’ve owned a 968 cab, a 944S2 cab, and two early 944 coupes, but I’ve not owned a 928.
Essentially I’m wanting to know how they compare as well.
The 968 and 944S2 are very much alike in feel with the 968s additional horsepower and especially torque being noticeable.
The 968 cab certainly felt heavier than the early 944 coupes, and I believe it is by about 300 Lbs.
The body reinforcements added to 944 and 968 cabs adds about 160lbs over the equivalent coupes.
In fact I think early 928s are about the same weight as a 968 cab, while S4s are a couple hundred pounds heavier.

We have a pre production 968 cab manual and a '91 S4. They're 2 different cars. The 928 is great for chewing up Kms in comfort on autobahns at speed. It was their top of the line model. The 968 became their base line model so doesn't have the same level of refinements but I prefer driving the manual on highway hills. Your clutch leg gets a workout around town, it has that faint whiff of machinery about her but you feel more connected to the car when driving as there's less dampening like with the 928. When you rev the ***** off the 968 and the variocams start doing their job then she starts to fly.
They're different beasts so it all comes down to the type of driving you'll do most. We solved the problem by just getting both 😂
