as i have so many new spares and a grey '90 GT casco i plan to build a second rally car .
I have a good "race" 16V for it , and suspension was already changed to track use , with roll cage installed. Of course S4 transaxle , LSD....if that works approx without the hydra pump and a dial in screw... ???? Not one inch oem electrical wire will be there any longer ...
This time without wider fenders or the 928MS skirts , oem....just build the damned thing !
plan is ..if wet or muddy rally i would use this one to spare my ultimate white build from disaster...... just keep it for dry rallies as long as it takes to make some progress / experience .....
thanks Pete... one problem to start with.... i bought that car in 2008/9 ? as a track car without papers.... Jerry Deweerdt had crashed his yellow 928 in the Bravo championship and build over quickly into this grey GT.... and sold it as he was going racing a Mustang.
Lucky all identity plates are still there.... i mailed Porsche if i can get duplicates of the papers.... for rally car i need the papers.
Now "GT"... i don't have that engine , besides, i use a 16V , as also Jerry was racing with one. ( he is showed on the 928MS site as a customer )
sorry , i cancelled the idea... that car was intended as a spare parts car ( body, S4 /LSD box, engine) and making it into a second rally car would mean i have to search for parts in case of mishaps with the white rally car. No , better keep it that way as parts source. The more i drove that engine /gearbox and was fine.... good luck finding that combination
sorry , i was just venting a idea..... won't happen.
i will do it "half" way.... waiting for parts for the rally car i started cleaning , restoring spare parts and see what i have/need .
Plan is to build the car again up as far as i have the parts , so that i can at least dyno the engine with my Weber IDF44's idea.
I will just avoid so far cosmetic costs which would be needless without a real purpose for that car .
As it is that far demounted ( almost bare shell ) and has a roll cage i don't see it ever again street legal.... to expensive compared actual 928 prices for running complete ones. So the only option would be rally or track car.
And fun... retired, i need projects
regarding spare parts for the rally car ... at least i will know what part works and what not (anymore) ..... it was after all 12 years in "storage" .
gathering parts i build/tested a ignition system.... to see , unexpected, that it draws 7 amps, even not running. Running ( spinning distributor with a drill ) it doesn't change much.
So it was time to test a more modern ignition module which i had bought a long time ago.... according spec's it also takes care of the dwell.
Just tested the oem one on the rally car ..... also 6 amps , just ignition "on" , not running.
now that modern module gives nice sparks ( visual ) but only takes 0.07 amps at rest and up to 1 amp at 400 rpm ( as a 800 rpm idle ) , simulated with a drill on the dizzy. Strange.
No surprize, the coil went "warm" with the oem ignition module , not at all with the modern one.
Next dyno run with the rally car i will change once to the modern module and see if it makes any difference.
( modern module bolted on a finned alu cooling plate , cut from a big one )
perhaps someone is surprized to see a Accel coil.... story is i informed for a 1 Ohm ballast resistor as i bought for the rally car ( Bosch 2 times 0.5 Ohm , not that much different from the oem set 0.4 and 0.6 Ohm ) ... bought it in 2017 for 57 € , now 130 € ! crazy ...
Oem coil is 0.5 Ohm ... that makes 1.5 Ohm with the resistor. I happen to have a real 12V Accel coil of 1.5 Ohm primary. So the same , no need for a resistor .... but no aid in starting conditions , which i can't predict at the moment. Perhaps not needed at all.
